It wasnt @ all a tobacco product....It is what we now call Purple Salvia,(or the common sage plant),also if memory serves,they also enjoyed (not sure about spelling,sorry) Peiodi-pronounced=pay-o-dee!! I know that both of these naturally grown plants were enjoyed by Indians in the S.W. regions of the U.S.
