Max is not dead. Autodesk bought Maya and now Autodesk owns Max and Maya, two of the biggest 3d packages. You can a 1 year student version for around $150 (look for student software sites like journeyed.com) the never expiring student version goes for around $600 and the full commercial version is around $3400. Be prepared for lots of work! it's not an easy program and you could spend weeks/months just trying to do simple things.

If you want, you can get it for free. Just search Google for "gotphaze". Type gotphaze and click "I am feeling lucky".
However if you can afford the software, I suggest that you buy it. It costs more than $500. I am not sure about the exact price. :D

but remember,
3d studio max is over.
that compony is closed. it means 3d studio max 9 will never born.
i sugges you , try MAYA.
but if you know nothing about MAYA and just wanna use 3s studio , i ll give you SN.
