a variable resistor can be used for two main purpses one is for voltage control which is called potentimeter and the other is current control which is called rehostat. A rehostat is formed when one end terminal of resistor is connected to the middle terminal or left open, then the current flows through the resistor and the varition in resistance value causes for change in flow of current.
