Religions are not about peace and harmony. They are about controlling the population. Ever wondered why everytime they explain a supposedly bad event in holy books that new rules are introduced or the rules change?
A word from the prophet ME: Do not kill - this means DO NOT KILL. How many times must the gods repeat themselves: DO NOT KILL - NOT FOR WAR, NOT IN SELF DEFENSE, NOT TO PUNISH CRIMINALS - DO NOT KILL... EVER!!!!
Maybe when Moses was handed this written in stone it was lost somewhere along the line.
I guess the problem lies with all the contradictions in the holy texts out there.
At least in the Christian Bible it says in the 10 commandments You shall not kill. But it also says in another part that certain acts require that people be put do death by stoning. Then later Jesus steps in and says not to do it.
I guess what I'm saying is this:
The boss is giving mixed signals.

We have all chose to make friend with one negative, ie ignorance. Religions are for harmony and peace and progress. Islam never talk about making weapons but taught science for the advancement of human race. This weapon got into the hands of the west and all they do is to first make the weapon to subjugate everyone and this has been their preoccupation ever since.
We lack good memory of history. When intellectuals talk, they hardly find reason[s] to convict islam, but the freelance, society guy, want to live life type will continue to use religion to justify why they cannot tear the world apart and turn it into a dancing ground, why they shouild not be legalised to fornicate and pollute the earth. Religion is still the saving grace- if only you can reason.
In anycase, all the wars around are only wearing religious uniform, they are ladden with deeper reasons and meanings. It is total ignorance that makes a xtn for instance to think that the Jew is a jolly friend of theirs and that they are a defender. The Lebanon are mostly xtns are Israel is busy killing and targetting this. They hold as a believe the extreme and devilish beleive that Jesus [as] was a bastard. How else can you convince a xtn that the first enemy is never a muslim but a Jew.
The 9/11 left so many questions unanswered, but we live in a world where you do not need any jury to pronounce you guilty, once the US does. you are guilty as charged or perhaps the UN.
Is saddam guilty as charged? Do all his people deserve that bombing and killing? Despite the fact that till date no weapon so claimed has been found. Is gaddaffi also a criminal? He is the darling of his people who rather than ask for destructive democracy are asking him to contuinue- as long as the populace are well off. Milosevic died without sentece as a war criminal. Can you read the reason for hias fall? Who aided his atrocities? Taylor is a war criminal. Is this the real charge or the gold mine in sierra leone? If you read international politics, i think you'd get wiser.
Need say more?

Religion isn't about peace and harmony at all to start with.
Religion makes people practice so-called "good deeds" by dangling rewards like eternal after-life and heaven.
But the problem with this is, people are not doing good that is straight from their heart, they are doing good for their own personal selfish reasons, so that they can reach heaven or nirvana or whatever.
And then you have all these contradicting religions all claiming different sort of things you have to practice to reach the "better" place, and people start getting pissed off with each other's version of a religion. Everyone insist that their religion is the genuine one and all other religion are blasphemy, so what happens?
War!
I could never see religion as a movement to promote peace. It just deprives people of their freedom (having many rigid rules), causes discontent (eg. why does my religion forbid me to do this while other religion can?), then these deprived people start loading off their frustrations on other different religion people. Religion is a real timebomb. Those holy priest that molest little boys? Perfect example of what too much deprivation can do.

Because the bad people of any religion are betraying their own religion's beliefs. The peaceful members of all religions fight back because they don't believe in murdering. They have to fight to survive against anyone who is extremist of any religion. Of course, the extremists take it as though the good people are the terrorists, just for fighting back.
My sociology professor once said that religion caused more war than anything else. It doesn't make sense that it is this way.
The news says lately that the Middle East is on the brink of war, and of course, religion has to do with all the problems over there. It seems odd for the news to say that the Middle East is only on the brink of war...since there has been violence there for so long. All those daily suicide bombers in Iraq, for example, make me see it already in a state of war.

Some would argue there is no devil or god - there is simply mankind who create their own heaven or hell, who have the ability to destory or recreate their world. Religion is purely one of various responses that society has to try and impose some sort of social control. If as some religions would claim there was some benevolent force there would be no need to fight, no need to be in the right, because this force would stretch across cultural, social, ethical and political boundaries to embrace this world with peace, love and harmony. But as my original statement seems to be the only logical answer, then there will always be fighting, death and destruction, as different forms of social control clash and try to prove they are right above all else at the cost of everything around them.

Religions aren't all about peace and harmony, there are some muslims (think they're called the Shi'ites - no joke it was in an RE class) and they believe that if you have to kill them go for it, to rid the world of evil. And the Westerns, I don't think we are doing it on a religious ground, we're just fighting because thats all we know.

Religion is about peace and harmony but some religious fanatics don't understand a very simple philosophy that, apart from all this religion also speaks about loving one another and killing is bad...why do many blame religion for the violence that is caused....well, God never said 'Go kill people and glorify my name'...the root cause is the mentality of certain people who are barbaric and ruthless...they just wanna prove to the world of their existence and in many ways have created a bad name for many religious groups....There are so many good things that religion speaks of, and tell me do people follow them..? Never!!! So, who is to be blamed religion...or the fanatics. My belief is that..we as human beings should stop such killing of innocents and violence that destroys unity of people...Once we all stand together as one..no such people can shatter us, they would fall on their face...we are sensitive to religion but why make it our weakness...and not our strength....if we want we can bring peace and harmony in the world..all we gotta do is understand what is right and wrong....and never let fanatics brain-wash us!!!

Because they aren't.
Religion is about ignorance and power, and about being part of a group which is better than another group.
If you believe in a religion you think you have the answer, know the truth, are in the right, and that the "others" are wrong, inferior and even evil.
This justifies you in despising, maltreating and even killing them. At best they don't count (except as opportunities to convert them) at worst they are your enemy. It's just gang warfare.
Preachers are usually on a power trip, but its your money they're after as well.

Its not the religions to fault, its the people who follow it. Every religion has fanatics, lately everyone considers Muslims to be all bad and killers but in reality it is untrue. The fanatics of the religion believe that because God is somehow behind them that they are free from sin. This stands true for Christians as well since in Christianity we have the KKK, Neo-Nazi's, and many more. Humans are the true ones to blame. Who is without sin on this world

Because "religions" are NOT about peace and harmony...! Religions alone are little more than ritual clubs to belong to... flags and banners that too many people pretending to be "good" often hide behind - as some kind of "license" to kill and get their own way.
Like G.W.Bush and Tony Bliar - making sure we all saw them going to church - so they could pretend that God was on their side in bombing thousands of innocent civilians when attacking Iraq. But, of course, God wasn't on their side - God never would be on the side of anyone prepared to bomb and kill and wage war to get their own way...!!!
GENUINE peace and harmony can only be found in one way - with faith and TRUE BELIEF in the teachings of Jesus Christ and in God the Father...
Nothing else will do it - God knows...! Not "religion" and "going to church" - which, all too often, are just false-worship, humbug and hypocricy...!
