For Win XP, before whenever I turned on my computer, it immediately took me to my desktop, but later it changed. Now that annoying Log On box (that says user name and password) keeps appearing at the start of windows and I always have to click on either "ok" or "cancel" before I can get to my desktop. How do I stop that box from coming up, I just want my desktop to come up.

Where do I go in Control Panel?

Of course, "Users" was the first place I went to, but where from there? Or should I have not gone into "Users"?

Before you can make changes, you need to be logged in as the administrator of the computer, i.e. the account that has overall control. I'm also assuming you're running Windows XP.

PART 1 - Creating the Password.

The first thing you need to do is set a password for your account (if you haven't already).

1. Click Start → Control Panel and double-click on 'User Accounts'.

2. Under the title 'Pick a task...', select the first option (Change an account). You'll be taken to a screen showing you the different user accounts on your system. Select the computer administrator account.

3. A new screen will appear with the title 'What do you want to change about your account?' If you haven't got a password set, option 2 will read 'Create a password' - click on it. If you've already got a password set, option 2 will read 'Change my password'.

4. Enter a new password and confirm it. Now click on the 'Create Password' button on the bottom to save your changes. Another screen might appear asking you if you want to make your files and folders private. If you're the only person that uses the computer, just select 'No'.

PART 2 - Getting Rid of that Annoying Login Window

1. Click Start → Run. In the small window that pops up, type 'cmd' without the quotes and hit enter. A black window known as MS-DOS prompt will pop up.

2. In the MS-DOS prompt window, type "control userpasswords2" without quotes and hit enter.

3. A new window with the title 'User Accounts' will pop up. Under the 'Users' tab, highlight the name of your computer and de-select the 'Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer' check box and click on the 'Apply' button.
Tip: Your computer name is displayed on top of the Start menu.

4. A new window will pop up asking you to input and confirm your password. Once that's done, click 'OK' and close the window.

That's it! Restart your computer and if all goes to plan, it should bypass the login screen and take you directly to your desktop.
