I believe we hear this claim in every generation. Truth is, it's only a segment of a generation who feels this way. The "greasers" of the 50's, Hippies of the 60-70's, etc. were known as anti-establishment...and the family is an establishment.
I would think the main difference today is the larger amounts of broken homes. A larger number of kids being raised outside a traditional family and 2 parent environment. As such, you may have a larger percentage who have simply lost faith in parenting really having a meaning. It was the people who brought them into this world, but someone didn't bother to stick around. Too many kids evolved through a sexual relationship, not a loving one. To a larger percentage, the whole concept of a secure home life and solid parenting has become a mystery. This lack of knowledge is passed on to the next generation...and so forth until the pattern is broken.

It depends on what u mean by disrespectful- their attitudes towards their parents?; they disobey their parents?; personality clashes with their folks?; disrespect due to past traumas or issues which have scarred the person?...... see there are many questions branching off from this question itself and there could be many reasons why the person is "disrespectful" to their parents.
I think one main thing could be that we, as the new generation take alot of things for granted and we tend to want to do everything 'our' way; and so because of this, we are blinded by our own selfishness which unconciously turns us to not care about what others feel, think or advice our parents want to give us because it contradicts our own perceptions.

I believe every generation has been accused of being "disrespectful" to their parents. Progress and changes in our world tend to result in children having different ideas about life than their parents. That to some may seem "disrespectful."

This new generation is disrespectful because the parent have to worry about child protection services stepping in and threatening to take their children away if they come down on them the way they need to. Not only that but television programming and commercials are targeting the kis to want and disobey. It all adds up to unruly children.

Im gonna have to agree with Puddleduck82, kids are disrespectful cause there are no enforcable consequences. I'm 23 and I remember when my mom or dad could wack me for back talking or being rude. And they did, and I thank them for it. There is a line and people need to acknowlege that. Wacking ur son or daughter cause they cursed or hit a sibling is one thing as opposed to wacking them for spilling a glass of soda or dropping a plate.

Faults on both sides. It takes lots of effort to gain respect from your children. The next generation questions everything and thinks it is smart. The old generation does not give rational answers. Hence the problem. Parents have to set examples and understand their children's inner feelings.

Because most families cannot survive on one income; thus, both partners need to work; therefore, the kids are not always properly supervised and disciplined.
Further, if you discipline a kid today in the same way we were disciplined, the kid could call the police and claim child abuse.

because parents are too scared to discipline their children. when i was younger, my parents thought nothing of giving me and my brother and sister a smack, or grounding us when we were bad, and we have all grown up pretty well. However, I see so many parents today who just want their children to love them so much, that they wont discipline them, and let them get away with blue bloody murder as a result.
