I don't think so. Look how many generations of kids grew up without it.

Necessary? No, and i'm a preschool teacher of three and four year olds. there are benefits and there are drawbacks, as with everything. I would never advise putting a young child in a very formal, structured environment though, and I would try and choose a playschool that wasn't going to overstimulate and therefore stress my child. I'd probably do this by not putting them in fulltime though.
as to play school giving a child a head start in life, while this is a very emotional issue as many people justify their jobs and lifestyle choices by using that as an excuse, a good home life is the most important factor in providing children with a headstart. a good play schoolthough, does wonders in all sorts of areas, providing all sorts of experiences, and it definately does no harm.

I think it is important to put children under 4 years old in a play environment. They cope better with others, learn to share, socialize and have fun. It has to be very free and minimal structure with an everyday organized routine. I think it is wrong to not expose your child to these environments a few hours a week. I assisted in Kindergarten and noticed there was a boy that had no exposure before he was 4 to play groups or any pre-school. He was so stressed out and clingy with his mom. He really struggled and it was a shock to him being there. I agree, it isn't good to push your child into too many structured, adult directed activities before 4 or put them in daycare 40 hours a week. But children need exposure to some structured environment. Kids learn through play.

It is very necessary. Put yourself in a frightened kindergartner's shoes, you have been at home with Mommy for the past 4 years of your life and then one day you get plopped in front of a stranger and 20 some other kids you don't know and are expected to concentrate on things you don't understand for 6 hours a day. Don't you think that would seem a bit overwhelming? I put my 3 1/2 year son in preschool for two days a week for 2 1/2 hours. He was not drilled for hours on his ABC's and 123's, he learned them through fun hands-on activities in a structured but fun-filled environment and got to come home for lunch and sit down and tell me all about his "day at school". Next year he will go 3 days a week for 2 1/2 hours a day and the activities will become a bit more structured and have a slightly more academic focus to help him adjust to the way his day will be when he starts kindergarten. It isn't really about making sure they know how to write their name and count to 50, it is about helping them have an easier adjustment to kindergarten and can be very beneficial in diagnosing problems early.

Absolutely! Even in a less "structured" teaching environment, children are learning about absolutely everything through play... ranging from social interaction, empathy, mathematical concepts, problem solving, predicting... the list goes on and on... If children are developing these areas through play, it is setting a solid foundation that will compliment and enhance their formal learning in later years.

i do not have children but i think for young children its important that they are exposed to many environments.
They need to learn, but they need to play (to grow creativity)
Play school is a chance to learn social interaction, that is important too.
I would personally choose one that focused more on interaction that organized teaching.
Teaching has become so important, you child must read.. must learn this, must learn that, its not that important, you need to give your young child balance.
These experts want to create the best high school math teacher, because without fostering all environments, that's all your child will be able to do, recite information.
