why do you want to know? how does it help you?
different people face different situations and hence the background story would be different.
IF I had done it, then somethings (read: situations) that are beyond my control might have forced me to do it. thus, it justifies my actions. but, its not the same with everyone, someone will do it out of fear, someone out of foolishness and someone out of lust, and someone out to cheat and escape.. !! but what you should know is that you trust your partner completely and that he/she is committed to you and thus both of them have to work it out. the point is, there might be lots of differences between people, but marriage is a unified vision to look at the same future, TOGETHER.
for me, I dont know what lies in my future, I can make it better, but without my sweetheart, however bright the future is, its worthless!

You might have done it, hence the question.
The people do this, when they cannot control their sex instincts.
Whether you elope, date, marry - it is only for sex.
