Do you celebrate Christmas, Easter, etc....I know these originated as pagan holidays, but if you celebrate them as Christian holidays, WHY???? If you do not believe in God?

Yeah, I do. In a manner of speaking anyway. I celebrate Christmas (or as I like to refer to it, X-Mas) because it's become a materialistic holiday. And I have no explanation as to why I celebrate Easter other than Cadbury Eggs are the most delectible little morsles known to man!
But if you look into it, both of those holidays have Pagan roots. There's been historical evidence to suggest that Jesus was not born in the winter, so December 25th is not his real birthday. It has been very common for the Christian faith way back when to create and rename holidays to cover up existing Pagan ones. Whenever Jesus was born, we celebrate his birth on that particular day because it took the place of some Pagan revel.
Easter is similar. Have you ever wondered where the name comes from? It actually stems from the name of a Pagan goddess, Ishtar, who gave a virgin birth to the reincarnation of a sun god. Sound familiar? Christianity didn't even change the name of the hopiday. They just slapped a different explaination to it. And since Jesus's birthday was just a few months ago, why not dedicate this one to his reserection? The time laps between the two dates matches up more-or-less with what's in the bible.

Do I celebrate Christ's birth and resurrection? No. Do I celebrate Christmas and Easter? Yes. Well, not Easter, but I do celebrate Christmas. I also celebrate both Eids although I don't fast during Ramadan and will never go on Hajj to Mecca.

Why? Well, oddly enough, because I celebrate my family. Because Christmas gives me a chance to share in giving with my Christian relatives and the Eids give me a chance to share in giving with my Muslim relatives. Because I love them all.

Can you please tell me what you find strange about this? Because I am mystified...

I am an atheist and yes I celebrate Christmas and Easter. Holidays to me are very much about family. However yes I somewhat celebrate them as religous holidays, my husband is catholic and we are raising our children by teaching them about different religions and the basics of those religions so someday they will have alot of knowledge to choose what they believe.

I participate in the "pagan" manner of giving gifts or candy ... Easter not even really anymore. I do not view them as a celebration of Christ's birth or his resurrection ... just as holidays.

Why?

Well, because living in the United States you generally get these things shoved down your throat ... it's easier to go with the flow at times rather than constantly trying to push upstream.

** What a good question! **

Atheists claim they do not wish to get involved in anything reminiscent of Christianity, and even though these holidays are definitely not of Christian origin, many atheists admit to celebrate them, thus associating themselves with Christianity by default. How interesting.

I don't celebrate christmas, or any holiday for that matter. Don't assume that we do. But why shouldn't we? They aren't YOUR holidays.

David G490 is really pissing me off. He answers every question by pasting that answer. Do you really think people are listening, David?

Yes...in my family it's a time to get together to celebrate the love we have for each other. It has nothing to do with anything religious...we don't even go to church on those days. Plus, who doesn't like presents and candy?

I do. It is a capitalist holiday for me. No praying or religion but lots of gifts. I bought David G497 his new butt*plug to try to keep his brains in last year.

well, considering christmas/easter has zero to do with either of those subjects, tell me how does a pine tree covered with ornaments(which is strictly against bible teaching btw) and a egg carrying bunny got anything to do with jesus?

Because THOSE WERE NOT CHRISTIAN HOLIDAYS!!!

THOSE HOLIDAYS WERE HIJACKED BY CHRISTIANITY!!

Christians stole them! They are completely ok holidays to celebrate, and you don't have to be religious.
