My ex often mentions other women to me, but then also sends out signals he likes me, so I never really know what to think. Do these women really exist or does he mention them to make me jealous and want him more and to think all women are running after him? Or is he testing the waters to see how I feel about him? I don't make a habit of mentioning guys all the time to him and don't kiss and tell, so why does he like me, then doesn't and mentions girls,. then likes me and so the cycle goes?

I wish I knew. Something similar happened to me. I got the "I am still in love with you" while also getting to hear about his fiance. And he came back to tell me this why? I still don't know how he expected me to react.

I was just beginning to get over him and had met someone new that I was really taken with, so maybe your guy just senses that you are trying to move on? I think maybe he is testing the waters, I think that's what my ex was trying to do at the time, but he just wound up confusing me and it hurt all over again.

Hopefully he will be more upfront in future about things. I wish I could give you better advice. Men are so confusing. And they call us difficult to understand.

I do think he does still care for you from what you've said about his actions. Whatever you do, please don't let him hurt you. He has to risk something and work out who/what he wants. It's only fair.

It means he is trying to subtly control you by letting you kow that YOU ARE NOT HIS ONLY OPTION, if you happen to decide and leave. Don't buy this! It's BS and is only meant to make you feel bad! Of course if this 'manipulation and dishonesty' bothers you, then it's best to seek a relationship where you TRUST your partner.
Start talking about other guys and see how he reacts. Once he's pissed enough to confront you, be sure to let him know of the cliche saying known as "TURN AROUND IS FAIR PLAY".

Men never want to let you know that you make them jelouse!

Honey, you start "making it a habit' to talk about "some guys" (make em up if you must). How did and why did this relationship end? Did you cheat on him or vice versa. If you screwed things up, then maybe he's trying to get back at you. I dunno. it's been my experience that men talk about other women, so they know, that you know (or think) they are attractive to other women. It's so lame and transparent.

He's trying to use the jealous angle. He's hoping the thought of him being with another woman will make you want him back so he won't be taken by another.
