Other than physiological necessities, two things:
My money and my car.
I'm not exactly rich and my car is relatively cheap and has given me some problems, but having even a little bit of money to spend and my own car to get me around have proven to be usefull resources.
Like I said, neither is extravagant but not having to depend on a friend for a ride or a few bucks to pay for dinner is very empowering. And that feeling is increased by the fact that most of my friends do need to rely on others.
