Any dog would make a great guard dog if trained right. I had a lab mixed (he passed away today, I am very sad), he was a great guard dog! His name was Lucky.

Name ideas:
Buster, Bear, Killer
or to make people think you have a small dog:
Tiny

Most of the dog breeds you mentioned will naturally act as guardians when at home, but some dog breeds have been especially developed or selectively bred for their natural inclination to guard and defend the territory and people they consider as having under their custody.

A panel comprised of dog breeders, veterinarians, and dog trainers have established a list of dog breeds especially suited for guard dog duties. Dog breeds that qualify as guard dogs must possess a natural inclination to protect along with a strong sense of territory. They tend to be wary of strangers. They stand out for their courage and their resistance to counter-attack.

Other qualities considered as essential by the panel were: trainability, loyalty towards the owner, stress-resistance, watchfulness, and the deterrent factor. The deterrent factor includes not only the impression an individual dog makes because of his bulk, voice and color (black is more impressive than white) but also how recognizable the breed is as a guard breed. A Rottweiler or Doberman will be more easily recognized by a would-be intruder as a guard breed than an Akita or cross-breed, for example.

The list this group developed is as follows and may cause you to look at your choices a bit more broadly.

1. Fila Brasileiro
2. Rottweiler
3. American Pit Bull Terrier
4. Doberman (females moreso than males)
5. Dogo Argentino
6. Belgian Shepherd Dogs
7. South-African Boerboel
8. German Shepherd Dog
9. Cane Corso
10. Presa Canario (of Diane Whipple/San Francisco fame)
11. Tosa Inu
12. Neapolitan Mastiff
13. Dogue de Bordeaus
14. American Bulldog
15. Ca de Bou
16. Bouvier des Flandres
17. Giant Schnauzer
18. Thai Ridgeback
19. Bull Mastiff
20. Akita Inu

I have 2 Dobermans, so my vote would be in that direction. They took to protection training extremely well, and it takes just one word to put them in that mode. Otherwise, they're just big goofballs!

And before people wig out, a Doberman trained to use what they do instinctively is FAR safer around strangers than one untrained.

I think any dog could make a decent guard dog if you know how to train them. Some of the more known breeds are of course the german shepherd, pit bull, rottweiler, doberman pinscher and any other "scary" looking dog. I have a husky and she is a wonderful guard dog, because I trained her to be one. Also, my mutt is fiercely protective of my property and I never even trained her to be like that...haha...:)

I have trained dogs for personal protection for quite a few years, the best breeds are German Shepherds, Belgian Malinois & Dobermans.
If you want a husky, do not count on any protection at all. I have 2 and they welcome strangers with open arms. They don't bark, they rarely bite, they are actually on the list of alltime worst guard dogs.

All large, watchdog type dogs HAVE to be obedience trained and look up to one person in the household. they have to be loved, respected and fed very well. In return they will automatically want to protect you and their home. Look very carefully at the pups parents, in looks and especially temperment. A home guard dog and family pet should not come from very aggressive, or unstable parents. It will naturally guard because it is well adjusted, obedient and loves its family. Tip - Treat it right! They also need to know their in the family but at the bottom of the pack.Mistreated equals dysfunctional dog.I dont think Huskys are very guardy or obedient in their nature. German shepherds, Blue Cattle dogs, they also come in red! Smaller, but serious!Japanese Akita (very big, look like Huskies, dominant type of dog, need to know what you're doing with them)
Rottweilers, Alaskan Malamute, but they get hot, good for cooler climates. All these need to be taught never to growl at kids. Never a Pit Bull or similar. All dogs, but especially large, have to be exercised daily outside the yard. Otherwise they go stir-crazy! and who could blame them?
