If I had to choose 5 things to make the world a better place, they would be kindness, compassion, generosity, humor, and tolerance. Not necessarily in that order. I think I would take away bigotry, hate, greed, violence, and the need to always be right. Most of the world's problems are because people want to be treated fairly, but they don't practice what they preach. I try to be all these things I mentioned, and I am often called a doormat, a sucker, and all kinds of other negative things. That makes me very sad. It doesn't have to be this way. We should try to live by the golden rule, but I don't fel too hopeful that it will happen.

It is a very profound and a deeply thoughtful question. Here are my five suggestions:
i) Most conflicts arise on account of the egoist thinking that I am right and others are wrong. Most religions preach (except Hinduism) that my religion is superior so get converted to my religion. This conversion has to stop.
ii) Most fights are owing to greed or possessiveness. Communism was once thought to be the answer. But it did not abort the instinct. Religion was also conjectured to provide the solution thru charity and renunciation. But that almost got out-dated. Yet charity (not taxation) has to be compulsory and a limit to ownership imposed (wealth beyond a limit has to be taken away).
iii) The rule of law has to be strengthened. For this education (about what is right and what should be the law) has to be deliberated and spread far and wide and for enforcing this the policing has to be stricter and efficient (that should be applicable to all).
iv) Empty mind is devil's workshop. So every one has to be kept busy with some work (gainful/useful employment) Government alone can not provide all jobs. So trade and business has to go up. (Liberalisation and globalisation).
v) Man -woman relationship has to improve so that there are no stressful families that harbour dis-satisfied men, women or children (happiness in families thru understanding and dialog)
