Well, first teach him to do #1 in the toilet. He should not sit. This can be done 2 ways. Either have another male member of the family watch him go, and have your nephew imitate the behavior at the same time. This of course has to be someone he trusts implicitly, perhaps his father, his favorite uncle or cousin. He will think its cool to do it "the big boy" way. It helped my son even more when I would put a few fruit loops (yes, the cereal) in the commode and tell him to sink them. He won't be able to sink them, but he will keep trying, hence, going the big boy way. After he's mastered #1, then explain big boys also sit on the big boy toilet to do #2. Give him a favorite treat and do a little dance everytime he goes #2 in the toilet. Remember Kirste Ally in "Look Who's Talking" with John Travolta. They always did the "Pee Pee in the Potty" song and dance when little Mikey went. Kids love that.

SKIP THE PULL-UPS!!! That is my biggest advice. My 3 year old is fully potty trained but will still shamelessly pee in a pull-up. They are diapers plain and simple. The only use for them is for bedtime and if you have to go out and a bathroom will be IMPOSSIBLE to find.
BE CONSISTENT!! potty train from the time they get up until they go to bed, no matter what is going on in your life.
TAKE HIM OUTSIDE!! If it is possible let him play outside naked. Take the potty outside and when you see him start to go, grab him and sit him on the potty.
REWARD!! Bribe, M&Ms, cookies, stickers. Have a party, dance and sing. Brag about his accomplishment, make sure he hears it, but pretend you don't want him to hear it.
Dr. Phil says to have them teach a baby doll to go. Then have a party for the baby doll.
I think boys should sit for awhile for #1 and #2. At first it's hard for them to learn the difference and the different fellings that go with them. If you teach them to sit at first it keeps you from cleaning poop up off the floor. Save the lessons about standing up for latter on when the new starts to wear off of the potty. It happens about 1/2 way through they get bored and lose interest you have to pull out new tricks.

It's not easy... and it can't be achieved in a week.. I just started potty-training my daughter... I bought her a little potty, put it in the bathroom next to the big potty...
make sure you teach him how to say 'potty' and not to be gross, but it helps if you go the potty and tell him what you are doing... let him sit on his potty and play with it (the potty of course).. so he will know that it's 'his'.
I'm sure he can take his pants off (and diaper, too) by himself - and that's a good start... teach him how to say 'pee' and 'poop' ...those are the easiest to pronounce for little kids... and teach him 'what' they are ... that will take awhile (maybe a few days)
Then after he goes on his potty for the first time, encourage him A LOT -praise him, he just passed a very big milestone! :)
**Most importantly... you HAVE to excersize patience with him.. I know it gets frustrating, but smile, laugh and encourage him.

His mother needs to do it. He won't take direction from you because you're not his parent. IF you are successful, he will probably only use the potty around you and continue to mess himself around mom. Why is she pawning this task off on you? That's her child- not yours. Every other mother in the world is having to potty train, why shouldn't she??

tell his mom that you are not the one that conceived him so you are not going to be the one to potty train him. you can help, but this really is a parent-child issue and the parent and child should be the ones going through this.

His mom had him, his mom can friggen toilet train him. It comes with the territory when you have a child....you don't get to pawn the hard stuff off on other people.
