I believe you have a choice. The way you lived your life and choosing Jesus as your savior will be the deciding factor if you go to heaven or not. Chose wisely.

OK. I have the answer. Although I don't know exactly what happens after all brain activity ceases...this is what I know:
1. My mother had the "flying down the long dark tunnel on a red carpet towards the bright light at the end of it" experience. She was 7 years old at the time, her heart had stopped while being operated on when this happened. There's more to tell but as she neared the end of the tunnel, she heard a loud explosion, which, she thinks, was the heart defibrillator shocking her heart back into rhythm.
2. My sister, who has had a congenital heart defect all her life, suffered ventricular fibrillation on the 4th of July 1999. An ambulance was summoned and she had to be defibrillated 4 times on the way to the hospital. While in the Emergency Room, before the 4th shock was administered, her ears began to ring very loudly and then nothing. The pain was gone, she thought to herself, "This must be it...I'm dead." There was no pain, it was very peaceful and comfortable; she said it felt like she was wrapped in warm black velvet, and she didn't mind being there. She wasn't afraid at all. They shocked her heart and the next thing she knew, she was looking into my younger sisters' face.
3. My mother passed on two years ago 4 months after a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer. We were with her when she died. She tried so hard to hang on, but we told her it was ok to let go, we would all be alright and we were all there with her. I said to her, "Bobby and Daddy are waiting for you," and right after that, she took her last breath. It was as if she was trying to let us know that they really were there waiting for her, or at least that's the way I like to think of it.
So, I'm not afraid of death...more of the pain that comes just before it. And I think that we do go on in some way.

It appears that some people "blink out" and who they were as persons is gone instantly at the moment of death. Nothing remains once the body is dead. Some people have long extended periods of dying up until the last moment with slow decay of heart rate, brain activity and bodily functions.
Every generation, every society, every religion and every person ponders on the moment of death. Personally I believe that we are all spirit embedded in a flesh casing, and at the moment of death we are released.
What happens next? Golly, let's all go and find out. Or maybe, maybe we can just enjoy being people and having lives, we can learn how to love each other and give love in return. Maybe, the spirit exists only because it is boundless energy and love all rolled into one. Hanging around clouds, wearing angel wings and playing a lute just doesn't hack it for me.... there is way too much to live for here in my present corporal form.
Why worry about what happens at the moment of death? Spend all your time thinking about that and you'll miss the experience of living. I guess our job in this lifetime is supposed to be thinking about what it all means... and ultimately we loose the ability to have a great life because we are deeply fixated on trying to figure out all these supposed meanings....
Grab a bottle of the old vino, bring us some chips, and let's discuss this person to person... that in of itself if the true meaning of life. Worrying about what happens after.... is meaningless.

Because we have observed people die, and through numerous studies of the brain, we know that when you die, brain activity ceases and your body no longer functions.
Its no big mysteries guys, they have even explained using neuroscience why some people see a long tunnel with light at the end when they are close to death, it is just aside effect as the brain dies.
The only spirit you have is the alcoholic type you can buy.

You can know what happens at death the same way you know anything - by experience and reason.
If you actually use these, instead of listening to ancient fairy tales, the conclusion is that NOTHING happens to you after death, because you no longer exist.

I have no idea, but my grandmother died last March and I watched her as it happened. As she stopped breathing, she barely opened her eyes and smirked, very faintly. She didn't smile, she smirked as if she saw something funny. I guess that was perfectly in character though, she had a wry sense of humor so naturally on her way out, she'd see something funny. And I think when you die, your life DOES flash before you, and if you've got the chutspah then you can find it within yourself to laugh at how goofy you were. As to what happens after...well...I'm in no hurry to find out. I still have a few things I wanna do in the meantime.

the spirit is the breath of God. It returns back to God. you will lay asleep in the grave till judgment day. The dead know nothing. It is like they are sleeping.
