We need to pay the rent to host a great place. You'd be suprised of the number of people who just want to hang out and order a soda.

A lot of time Cover is charged to pay for the entertainment. If a band is there 3 of the 4 bucks you pay goes to pay(cover) the band

Yes that and to cover the expense of entertainment but mostly to give you sense of having made an investment in your bar time. Makes it seem more exclusive and then you are less likely to leave and have a larger sense of reward.
