Look up the Ronnie Zamora murder case. Ellis Ruben used the TV intoxication defense. At the time I thought this was ridiculous. However, shortly afterwords Smokey and the Bandit came out. Leaving the movie theater I saw many dudes in the parking lot trying to imitate the (car) maneuvers. Yes, I believe that viewers were influenced by what they saw.
The new version of Smokey and the Bandit was released recently. Police were stationed outside of the theaters to stop this type of behavior--so police do subscribe to this belief.
