I went to China by myself when I had just turned 21. She will be just fine. There are other foreigners over there. As long as she does her research and seems like she has some common sense then she will be fine. I felt like because I was a female on my own that the Chinese looked out for me. I spent three days on a train and I felt like I had 10 moms looking after me, making sure I ate fruit with my dried noodles etc...She will learn a lot about herself and the Chinese.

i really don't understand the people who write "i've been here and never had a problem... so it's safe here" - like me saying "i grew up in USA, never got murdered... so no one here gets murdered.." In any case, the Chinese do have a violent streak (they are not all like Confucious) and I have been physically attacked in China during an argument with a taxi driver. it's a scary thing when many people surround you to watch and see what's going on. some of the other readers here probably haven't left their rooms much or haven't been around china very much. perhaps they hang out in the "foreign ghettos" and never learn much. it is not that safe. the biggest killers however are the drivers. china daily reported last week that traffic deaths went up by 8% - over 40,000 in total for first half of the year so far. anyway, it is a good experience to go there, but just need to be very careful. oh and yes, there are a lot of foreign scum going there these days.. have to agree with that. i moved there when i was 18... it was better those days. i had no problem during my first half year... thought things were great and secure... oh well.

hey, im 19 and moved to china to teach over a month ago. although i havnt been here for long.im really enjoying my time here and havnt had any problems.i would encourage anyone to come to china. i havnt found anything which worries me or makes me want to go elsewhere.i would say that if your niece wnats to go to china, she should move in mid august when school term starts again. also, make sure she knows exactly where she's going, not just the city, but actually what area and also if there are many other foreign teachers there too. i wouldnt worry about her moving here...especially if she's 21,she's an adult and has to learn to make her own decisions sooner rather than later. i would think that it is the age is ebgin learning about independance and to get out and see the world before it is compltely westernized, also before fulltime jobs, family, career etc. this is great learning and work experience.i dont regreat coming here at all.

Sorry but i dont really get the question! "with taht is going on?"
what exactly do u mean? because over there nothing bad is going on. there is just a fast growing economy.
i lived in china for more than 3 yrs... i left in december and i m hoping to go back in september... as a foreigner i never had any problem. i think it's a safe place and it has great job opportunities.
the first time i went to china i did not speak a single word of chinese. if she uses common sense she wont have any trouble.

I am a Filipina working in China. China is not dangerous at all. What do you think is going on here? It is one of the safest place I had been in. There's a lot of American school teachers here and some I believe are as young, if not younger, than your niece. They seem to be doing okay. If she is going to be in Shenzhen, let me know, I can try to look into the place where she will stay at and tell you what I think of it personally. :)

China is not a dangerous country , at least as far as major crime goes...there is a ton of petty crime...but the Chinese people are not very aggressively orientated....however...after 911 I delayed a trip to china because I didn't want to be mistaken for an american (I'm Canadian) in the world. I'm not saying this to be nationalistic or anything...just telling you my reasons for not going....all in all your niece should be fine...it'll be the adventure of a lifetime...and what's life without a few risks?

There is a lot going on and it's only natural that you should be concerned. That said it would be a shame for her to miss an incredible opportunity like that because of fear. So discuss her plans, find out as much information as you can, try to prepare for all emergencies, then keep in touch with her while she's there. Bad things can happen at any place at any time, don't let fear paralyze you or your loved ones!

Good luck

No your niece should not come to China.

The Chinese will welcome her and treat her with hospitality and respect.

It's all the creepy foreigners who are now flocking here who will probably pose the biggest danger to her here.

I say that as foreigner who has lived here for many years. The horror stories I have heard about young naive foreigners being exploited, robbed, raped, and assaulted by some of the evil foreigners who come here is legion.

Your niece will probably be GBH'ed and raped while out clubbing by that nice English Boy. Or her camera and cell phone will be stolen by that friendly Dutch backbacker she meets at a party.
Her South African boss at the English School will exploit her in the name of his Chinese bosses at the Franchise school by ignoring her contract terms and touching her in inappropriate ways.

There's a lot of foreign scum in China these days.

The Chinese, they are mild in comparison.

Your niece will have an amazing experience. I've taught in South Korea, Japan, China & Taiwan.
You're being incredibly dumb.

What is it exactly that people are so concerned about with China?

china is not a dangerous country..at least not in the big major cities. i would say it is far worse in america. we have lots of bad people here and people here that do not have any responsibilties for their actions.
everyday people get mowed down in car accidents and the perpertrators take off. they call it a 'hit and run', well..it happens daily in every city in america. people are bad here.
i live in a city where crime has gotten to be just as bad or worse than in places like NYC and East LA.
no kidding, even good expensive places are turning into ghetto like atmosphere.

go to china and enjoy it.
the people there are not half as bad as they are here.
