I hear a lot of mixed people say that they are (pretend) Filipino and Spanish... Isn't Spanish a language? So... How could they be Spanish? Wouldnt they say Mexican or Hispanic or Latin?

Spanish = Spaniard = Person from Spain.

I don't believe it qualifies as a race unto itself, but it is an ethnicity.

Also, in English we call the language "Spanish" (español--a lot of native speakers call it español also, depending on where they're from) but to be more specific, it's "Castilian" (castellano). There are actually several languages that come primarily from Spain (Castilian, Galician, Basque, Catalan), so calling just one of them "Spanish" is kind of a misnomer.

Espanol, is the name of the language, been spoken in Spana, Espanol a/o espanola is a person been born in Espana. Spain once an Empire created such conditions for their own language, conditions that are in many instances repeated and accepted with pride in the Spanish speaking Countries in the American Continent, practice and accepted by many Spanish speaking peoples, and not Hispanics, which is the U.S., interpretation of Spaniards, to make a difference between Spanish born in Spain and Spanish born in The American Continent.<< The real academy of languages is in Spain. >>>

In the US live , for sure many people from Spain, they are Spaniards. Americans when refer to Spanish- American people say Spanish. Spanish Americans call themselves Hispano (from Hispania, the Latin name of Spain)
and wrongly Latino (from Latium, an antique region of Italy)
Latino would include Brazil Portugal and Italy. More accurate would be Ibero- American.
For statistical purposes the US government classifies as Hispanic to people whose first language is Spanish. The last bother to many, for it causes all this fellows be considered as being of the same race. Very few of these know they are referred as spiks.
