I am from the UK work in JB and have been invited to a Chinese wedding dinner with my wife tomorrow evening. We have heard it is usual to offer a gift of money to the married couple but have no idea about this or how much would be appropriate. The couple are not close friends but we know them through drinking in a bar / restaurant where they both work.

Just been informed that it is called Ang Pau or something similar. Does that help anyone to answer?

Hi!Yes...it is called the "Ang Pau" in Chinese and the direct translation is "Red Packet". In the Chinese culture, it signifies auspiciousness, blessings and good luck. The amount of money must be in even numbers and ideally it will be about 40 dollars if only one person is attending and 80 for two pax. If you are not well-known to them then actually 60 dollars for two should be good enough. For very close friends, you can pack a hundred dollars or a hundred and twenty dollars if attending as a couple. Hope the information is helpful....

I agree with the previous answer....do not give them money as you don't know them all that well.....so a simple gift like something in crystal is usual for weddings even if its a Chinese Wedding....if you can't afford crystal then how about something really easy a pottery chip n dip plate....or some nice pottery mugs, or a gift voucher from a department store near the couple where they live...something alone those lines would be good....Good Luck in finding the gift.....

Have money with you. Then after you get there, ask someone in private that this is your understanding, that money be given, and you need to know what amount. Better have a gift also just for a back up. It (gift) can be returned if not given to the couple.

Get them a gift you would give back home and just tell them that you didn't understand their customes so you are giving a gift as you would back home.
