None of the programs mentioned thus far are really that great. I use Limewire when I need a quick song here or there, but Kazaa comes with too much adware that is very hard to get rid of, and I've never used Ares.
If you want to go beyond music, there are 2 MUCH better ways for file-sharing. They are a little harder to understand and set up at the beginning, but once they are set up, they work much better.
The first (and best in my opinion) is bitTorrent. First you have to download a client, such as bitTornado(www.bitTornado.com). There are probably better out there, but it really doesn't matter which one you use. Then find a torrent site (http://www.mininova.org) is a good starter. You download a file called a torrent, then when you open the torrent, you can start downloading the file. The cool thing about bitTorrent is that people with incomplete copies can still download things from each other.
Another alternative is called dc++. Strongdc++ is by far the best client, but again there are others out there (http://strongdc.berlios.de/download.php?lang=eng). To use dc++, you have to enter a hub. You can think of a hub as a chatroom full of people sharing stuff. There are a number of public hubs the program lets you join, and if you have the right connections, you can join some private ones as well. The cool thing about dc++ is that it lets you decide which directories of your computer that you want to share, and then people can directly search those directories. You can also download directories which make it a lot easier to get all songs from a cd or an artist. Choosing good hubs can also help filter out stuff you don't want when searching.
Also, with both programs, you usually have to do some manual port forwarding. This of course only applies if you are behind a router, but shouldn't be too hard to figure out or find information on.
That all being said, my advice is:
If you want music, use dc++ or limewire.
If you want entire cds or artist collections, use dc++.
if you want movies, use bitTorrent or dc++.
if you want programs, use bitTorrent

I use Limewire,WinMx,and Shareaza 2 right now.I love limefire it's perfect for music.it does have some spam but to me it's fine. I have Winmx too. For all of the people who thought it didn't work it does! get WinMx v3.31, it's also good. I use to have Ares and is SUCKED! too SLOW, Shareaza 2 I don't use and never liked. I tried to download BitTorrent but I seen it was gonna take like 3 hours or something like that BEST ADVICE get limewire or winmx v3.31

Torrenting works better for connection and efficiency. Less chance of a failed download. Faster downloads.
Technical Voodoo: Each piece has to pass a hash check. Swarming data algorithms help to reduce duplicate requests for data chunks

Ive never used limewire but I like Ares. It works very well for me and there is no adware or spyware or anything like that that comes with it. Kazaa is good too but it comes with a lot of adware which causes tons and tons of pop ups and once you have this adware its hard to get rid of, even if you unistall Kazaa.

I've never tried Limewire, but I use Morpheus, and I think it's excellent. Try downloading Morpheus and see if you like it (it's free), and if you don't, try Limewire.

Kaza is the best in P2P sharing software.
Ares is best than Limewire in any aspect.

I've never used either one. If I'm looking for something smaller I'll use DC++. If I'm looking for something larger I'll use torrents through BitComet.
