Do you guys think that that high school girl who got cut off in the middle of her validictorian speech for references to Christ was right to sue the school? I would like to hear all sides.

Thanks,
Kas

The law is that religion cannot be taught or established in school (it's called the Establishment Clause). I don't think that includes mentioning God in a valedictorian speech, but because she was representing the school and its students, she was probably interrupted because someone felt her comments might offend other students, faculty, parents, etc. While everyone has the right to free speech, perhaps she should have considered that not everyone shares her religious views and saved that portion of her speech for a Sunday morning service.

It would have to depend on the school's policies reguarding such statements. If there have been problems in the past with the seperation of church and state the school would be more apt to react the way they did. I understand the schools reaction because they need to make sure that no one is offended. If they did not stop the speech someone who was offended could cause a lot of problems. I personally would not have a problem with the speech, but that is not to say that the person next to me wouldn't.

Although I probably wouldn't want to hear someone preaching her beliefs during a valedictorian speech, I think she should be allowed to do so because of her freedom to say what she wants. But then again, maybe her rights were restricted because of the circumstances. I'd like to hear the argument in her case against the school.

She might have been told not to make any references about her religon, but she did anyway. This is a tough one as far as who's right and who's wrong. She was right in the sense that she was standing up for her beliefs no matter who said what. I don't know if suing the school just for being cut off is right or not, but again she is standing up for her beliefs. B/c Jesus said that if we are ashamed of him then he will be ashamed of us. Nowadays, school officials are trying so hard to make sure that no one gets offended that their solution is to tell the christians not to even mention Jesus in school or you'll get in trouble and that's not right.

No, I don't think she was right because she shouldn't have made those references if it was at a public high school. There's suppossed to be a seperation of church and state and when that line is crossed, something has to be done about it if we want to live the american way of life. She should have saved her christ talk for church or for her family.

hmmm...I don't know. I think its rediculous how the public school system does that though...here a cute (and true) story.

a college in Maryland was celebrating graduation. They had been told by the government not to mention religious staments in their speeches. They were staying to the rule. They didn't want any problems, even though they wished they could talk about spiritual points. one speaker got to the stand, he smile, and was about to begin his speech, when every single person in the crowd sneezed. All the speaker did was simply say "God bless you" and left the stage...he got a standing ovation...somtimes God works in interesting ways!

:)

Well who the hell cares. These are kids who waited 12 (or longer) years to get out of school and now they have to hear someone preach to them. They just probably wanted to get out of the hot sun and get drunk. Not listen to a sermon. But yea free speech and all. But honestly she should have just shut up. I'm sure she was the only one who wanted to hear self babble.

she has every right to file suit, however, don't those students who are not christians also have the right not to be proselyzed at their graduation ceremoney? what would she do if she was being proselyzed by a jew or muslim? would she be outraged by it, or would she walk out? we as a society have a right to practice our religious beliefs, we also have the right not to be preached at in a publicly funded educational setting. she was wrong to preach, but she can fight the system that guarantees the same rights that she has, as those who may oppose her actions.
