Stand out from the crowd. Don't complain about all the pety things a typical employee does. Don't demand a raise. Don't even talk about money. Bosses are always being pushed by employees who want more money. Instead, ask for more work, more responsibility, etc. The money will follow.
Always do your best. Don't take on a project unless you can do it well. If you know you are going to fail then discuss it early on with your boss. Explain why you need more resources or assistance with the project. Don't leave bad news until the last minute.
Always announce your successes to your boss. Your boss may not have known you had achieved something or realize how significant it really is. Make certain you explain specifically how great your achievements are for the company. Expressing it as a figure (number) really helps. (saved $10,000, improved efficiency by 10%, set a new record of ...)
Managers are people to. Get to know their interests so you have things to talk about.
Don't be afraid to disagree with your boss. Express your opinion yet respect that your boss gets the final say.

Do things that make your manager look good. Become a "go-to" person in some key areas of knowledge that are critical to the success of your business. Meet with your manager and let them know how you want to grow in your career and ask for new responsibilities. Ask questions like "What personal improvements and skill improvements can I make to be more valuable to the business?" If you are expecting them to notice the great things you do then you will get nothing. You are responsible for letting your manager know your accomplishments on a regular basis. Managers are so busy they don't have time to see what you do.

I"m assuming that you're an employee who wants to get recognized for good work. In that case, do things such as come to work on time in proper uniform and ready to get to work. Do what is required of you and then some. Instead of sitting/standing around waiting for the next assignment, find something to do. Smile and maintain a positive attitude. Remember, you never know who is watching. I just started a new job last month as an asst. manager and found out the other day that my boss has had a few of her friends come in to observe how I was doing. Luckily, they thought that I was doing a good job.

Notice what isn't being done, but that would help your group's function or budget.
Come up with a plan for doing it ( not a plan that says"those people should fix that)
Present the plan briefly to the boss. Ask if he/she want you to take action on this.
