the outer shell of corn is not digestible, it is made up of cellulose which humans do not have the enzymes to digest. However, corn is full of starch, which we can digest. If we break the corn kernel open, we can digest it, if we don't we dont digest it, and we dont get calories. The calories come from the starch inside the corn when you break the skin.

It only has calories if you chew your food. If it's still whole, you're not getting much out of it nutritionally or calorie-wise.
