Reincarnation definitely is fact, but it's not necessary to believe in it. In fact in most cases it's more beneficial to the person to remain unaware of it, like most of the people who answered this question.
A discarnate spirit has free will and can choose to pause, move on to the next incarnation or linger around loved ones - and in fact can do all three, simultaneously. Between lives the soul will go "home", which is a place without a sense of time. Your soul is so much, much larger and more complex than your own identity - the soul's origin is 'God' and shines through all of your lifetimes and through infinite time in both directions.
Your soul knows your history and knows its eternity and its promise. Between lifetimes the soul contemplates the life you completed and contemplates to what extent you have mastered - or failed - the opportunities that life gave you. The soul knows where your human journey will take you next, and the lessons you want - of your own free will - to learn.

Our spirits return to from where they came,God, our souls are waiting for the second coming of Jesus(being Jesus is the only one in heaven at this time) and our flesh (bodies) will return to dust. At the time of the second coming of Jesus all graves on land and sea will open up and we will be glorified into a new body with our soul and we will live in Paradise with in the New Heaven and the New Jerusalem(which will be the new earth)

The traditional Buddhist belief is that the souls go to a place called the Bardo. As I recall, there are different kinds of Bardo depending on what your karma is like.

The Christian faith tells me "...for it is appointed to each person to die once and then to face God..." ...guess I'll see for sure once I die, eh?
