I'm really surprised! The buddha as in laughing Buddha is not the real Buddha. He could have been a chinese monk. Buddha was an indian prince. He was one of the fittest and strongest person in his locality. According to most o his disciple in India Buddha's physique was quite amazing. He had really big arms and muscles and very little fat.
Entwined- The Indian buddha is not skinny. He is just not fat.

The fat Buddha is the Chinese Buddha. He is the only one who is fat.
Thai Buddhas, Burmese Buddhas, Indian Buddhas, Nepalese Buddhas, Sri Lankan Buddhas, Japanese Buddhas, Vietnamese Buddhas Tibetan Buddhas and all other Buddhas are skinny.
It's to do with the Chinese culture and the fact that Buddhism was adapted to fit that rather than the other way around. There has always been a culture around prosperity and material happiness in China (not necessarilly a bad thing), and that's why their Buddha is a fat, happy dude and all the others are very austere, serene and skinny.

When you typed this question I bet you got several similar questions on this very topic shown to you by Yahoo. All resolved. If you really wanted to "know" you would have read that and found out that Fat laughing Buddha is called so by Americans (why I am not surpised) but is not the real Buddha.
Buddha, Siddharta Gautam was a thin man who ate once in 24 hours .

There are many versions of Buddha. The fat Buddha is supposed to be the Happy Buddha.
