Yes they do spend time at sea... Not like the Navy but, they do go to sea. Most the time it is short trips but, when my husband was stationed in Hawaii he went to Hong Kong. The longest he was at sea was about a month. If I remember correctly. It's been a while. Also, they do MORE then just patrol the US Coast Lines. A lot of rescues, and customs type work. Water drills are huge, Boat Rescues, Boardings, Law Enforcement too. You spend a lot of time in and on the water. Obviously but, It can be a great career. Huge tip... If you are at ALL COLOR BLIND make sure the job you want excepts color blindness because you can be limited in what you are able to do.

No, they are on them all the time, but not "At Sea." However, when they get deployed, they belong to the Navy and have a hard time not being used to it. Also, the reason I never enlisted Coast Guard (career Army), other than not guaranteeing the exact job at enlistment, the Coast Guard die trying to save the life of a drunk trying to swim to Hawaii that probably deserves to die.

The Coast Gaurd is a branch of the military, but unlike the Navy, they patrol the American coast line. That should be enough to answer your question.

Not normally. During peacetime, the CG is a police and rescue force. They can be deployed during declared war. During WWII, they were the first line deployed - and had much higher per capita casualties than the Navy. My grandfather had nightmares of CG ships sinking around him during WWII his entire life.

Yes, the CG does do six month deployments. Most of it, however, is engaged in coastal maritime defense and search and rescue operations.
