The last time she was at the dentist they told her she needed to brush her gums better but they hurt her when she brushes. How high up the gums should she brush, as far as possible?

Tell her to yes brush her gums but only use soft tooth brushes never medium or hard not even for you. Too aggressive brushing is also bad as it wears away the gums and they never come back. A toothpick is also good to go along the gum line making sure all the plaque is off. Next a small childs toothbrush with a narrow head like the colgate plus is best. The small size fits under the lip quite well and she will be able to reach her gums easier. Tell her to be very gentle and after a few days the soreness will go away. Tell her that either she does a better job or you will start brushing her teeth for her. This worked for me with my kids. LOL! I never had to brush their teeth but did supervise the cleaning of them until they knew just how to clean their teeth.

Start by rubbing your gums with your fingers (no kidding) as much as possible for a few days. This will get some stimulation going so that a brush is not so harsh right away.
Warm salt-water rinses will help if there are any open sores on the gums.
and finally get a soft bristle brush and tell her to keep it with her all the time and use it as much as possible. Watching a movie??sit there with a tooth brush and massage those gums!!
As high as possible but not aggressively! Just massage the gums don't scrub at them.
Also I wouldn't invest in a Sonicare just yet - with wires on and sensitive gums the vibrations may be a bit much - wait until her gums are in better shape then go for the Sonicare.

As far up as possible would be great. If it's painful for her, try getting her a baby's toothbrush. They sell them especially for a baby's gums. You put it on your finger, kind of like a thimble. You can get it at Target in the baby section where they sell things like nail clippers, brushes...etc. Good luck.

The Sonicare brush is great for braces. It is not cheap ($100 and more), but if it saves even one filling, it has more than paid for itself.
