The mesquitos are getting really bad here and there are some carrying the West Nile Virus and some also carry heartworms. I have an outdoor dog and I am afraid of the mesquitos getting to her. What can I do to repel the mesquitos away from her? Is there a certain type of powder or anything that I can get over the counter? Please try to be specific of what it is and where to get it. Thank you.

I hope your dog is on heartworm!

Mix a little neem oil with water in a water mister and shake it up, just be careful you don't get it in her eyes. Its natural, works fairly well, and wont hurt your dog. Smells something AWFUL though!

I think I saw it at Petco last year, but you can buy it online too.

I use horse fly spray,it all so keeps mosquitoes away.a natural repellent is fresh basil, plant loads in your yard and then put some in the blender and mix it with a little water and a small amount of gin,put in a spray bottle and use on your dog, works well

Try Avon Skin so soft beth oil. They use it on horses so it might work on dogs.
Also try a snuggle dryer sheet hooked under the collar. I read somewhere that it works.

They make disposable wipes with DEET in and on them for people, but they also work wonderfully om dogs or cats. Also, Avon, Skin-so-soft, works just as good.

I get Advantage/Advantix from my vet; it works really well.

When i used one of the over the counter meds, my dog was scratching constantly. I don't think it worked.

My vet told me to use Skin so Soft by Avon, which also works on people. Not expensive, smells good, & non-toxic.

I heard that Frontline repels mosquitoes, fleas, and ticks from dogs (heard it on TV commercials). You can ask your vet if he can prescribe it for your dog.
