If you have to ask this question He is knocking!! When He knocks you think about Him enough to question and He can answer your questions just pray and allow Him to answer.

I believe that God knocks on the door of your heart when you see a miracle in life. It doesn't have to be extravagant, but you just know it's a miracle. Such as when a person commits an act of kindness towards you or when a good thing happens to you like a winning lottery ticket or you see an old friend again or when someone gives you advice that somehow helps your life.

There are a LOT of things written in the bible. There are also a LOT of things that people are dealing with emotionally, financially and spiritually. God directs us to watch as well as pray. God also instructs us to trust not in our own understanding, but in the word of God. And there are many instances where God tells us to have faith.
But, as a minister (Bayless Conley sp?, in CA) in a service that I recently attended while visiting relatives put it, "If you ask God to help you find a job, do you really think that you're going to here a knock on your door ....Knock, knock. God sent me here to apt 7A to tell whoever is in this apt that I have a wonderful job waiting for you?" No!
You have to READ the bible, have faith, prayer and ACT!!!! You may have not had the correct understanding on what God wanted you to do, but you need to take a chance. There may have been a lesson that God wanted you to have or help someone else have before you reach the step where you need to be. Pray that God will give you the understanding that you need.
I also find your question particularly ironic as just moments earlier this evening I recently chose a name for this forum to respond to someone else's question. The name I chose was based on the full text of the bible verse you quote in your question (completely unknowing to me):
"Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him"

God works through the preachers and teachers of the gospel. You will know when God is at the door of your heart when one of His servants is talking to you about Christ.
You must beware, however. There are many, many false teachers in the world. Don't follow the teaching of someone without checking it out first. Just because it SEEMS right, doesn't mean that it’s Jesus knocking.

When you are given the faith to see what you describe is more real then the ground you stand on or the keypad you are typing into. Then will you know without a shadow of doubt that the God of the universe is calling you. Many are called but few are chosen. The faith is given just prior to the knock. God is the giver of faith so through grace we may become children of God.

I am not Christian so I can only tell you as a Muslim, That when GOD knocks you know it. When you get this overwhelming need to connect with him. When you feel this overwhelming peace within yourself while at the same time you are compelled to read and study his books. When even the smallest Miracles speak to your heart and tell you that the most merciful creator touched this situation. But then I worship GOD and only GOD. Jesus (peace be upon him) is a holy prophet.

I don't really know how to explain it. Like with me i get so caught up with myself that i rarely talk to God. Then when He's knocking i ignore Him. Finally my life just feels so messed up without Him So that's when i humble myself and pray. That's how God knocks on my heart. There are times when i feel so crummy and sinful. That's when i repent and get on the right path with Him again.

You kinda feel a tug at your heart and you get this hunger so to speak, and you want to learn more and get as much knowledge and love from God that you can. You can feel it, you will know when it is real.

when God is knocking is when you feel like something is missing then you feel like praying asking what to do the knocking is meaning that He is trying to get your attention
