Is English the official language in Australia? Then, yes, they have to learn English.
The US doesn't have an official language. Its Constitution and laws are in English because the founders were English or of English descent. English is still the language spoken by the majority of the population, so anybody who immigrates to the USA should learn English, at least a little. Since there isn't an official language, however, other languages can be spoken and used on TV, on the phone, on the web, etc. Most companies now have bilingual websites and customer service, owing to the massive immigration of people from Spanish-speaking countries.
As for respecting your culture, any culture should be respected. And if you choose to live in a place where the culture is different from yours, of course you have to respect it.

Yes.
I have said 4 many years that immigrants 2 Australia should have a basic grasp of English & respect our way of life.
As u stated in your Q, if we went 2 a middle eastern country we would have 2 have a basic understanding of their culture &laws.
I lived in lebanon 4 several years & had 2 change my thinking so that I fitted in & was respected.
I at no time had a problem with any lebanese person as they r a friendly country, the only problems I had when I arrived back here were from some lebanese -australians who didn't respect australia or australians. OH I am also a muslim.
If u go 2 another country 4 a holiday u would learn a few basic words 2 get u food,drink & the toilet,wouldn't u ??

I believe that most people in any country feel the way you are suggesting. Immigrating to another county would seem to mean that you value the culture of the new country. If that is true then it would seem that you would want to understand it as best as you are able. That would begin with learning the language and the customs. Learning the history of the new country would also help.
The immigrant doesn’t have to leave their old country behind, but the new country should become the dominate force in their lives, else why bother to immigrate?

These problems have plagued mankind since two people weren't born in the same place. In this case, diasporic influences have to be taken into account. Yes, you were their first, but you should have to respect their culture as much as they have to respect yours. This includes language. I am truly sorry that you feel that no one respects your culture. Trust me when I say that you are not alone. However, keep in mind that these immigrants feel the same way. Give the situation time, education, and communication and the problem will become less severe. Try and keep in mind though that there will always be misunderstandings between people of different cultures.

I think anyone who wants to migrate to anywhere should respect their culture. Americans like to pretend we're the only ones that have the problem- we aren't. My sister studied abroad for a year during college and came back knowing nothing more about where she'd been than where the best bar in town was. Then she complained people were rude to her. I wonder why..

The problem is the US is with illegal immigration. Unfortunately, most Mexicans do believe that parts of the United States belong to them historically, so they use the false argument that they are doing jobs no one else wants to justify their illegal entry into the United States. What they are really thinking is that it is OK to enter illegally because part of California and Texas are a part of Mexico; thus, they are still in their native country and have done nothing illegal.

Is Australia monocultural? Whose culture should be respected? Yours, I bet, but what about the other cultures already existent in Oz.
Victory, humans can migrate. Sorry.

migrating anywhere you should have a respect for the people already there. If you intend to be a citizen of a place then you accept all of their laws ad cultures. If you're visiting it's different.

Sounds like the same thing as what's going on in the US. Do I feel LEGAL mexicans should learn to speak english if they're going to live here.....YES. If you're on vacation here, that's different. Same for australia...people should learn to speak the language. Heck, when I visit australia someday, I'll learn to speak australian;-)

Dale, my native language is not even english. I don't know ur country "australia". But definitely, we should all respect all countries culture. You don't move to another country to make impossitions. You should addapt and respect, and it doesn't mean you have to forget ur original culture.
