I was just diagnosed the other day and they told me to change my eating habits immediately... I'm not overweight and I'm used to eating what I want. I have NO IDEA how to understand the labels on the backs of things. Most labels don't even include cholesterol in their description. The doctor didn't give me any information other than to change my diet and eat foods with low cholesterol. Sure, I have a few ideas, but the labels confuse me. How do I know how much cholesterol is in something if the label doesn't say? How much cholesterol is too much for somebody in my condition? Is there anything else I should limit in my diet? Is there a website that lists foods and details about living with high cholesterol that's actually easy for somebody with no experience dieting to understand? I feel like I can't eat anything, and everything I love is high in cholesterol.

Oh! One more thing. Some labels only say that the cholesterol in something is less than 300mg, but then another part of the label says Cholesterol - 0. What's with that? I thought I wasn't supposed to eat more than 200mg a day with high cholesterol? Grr... so frustrating.

238 is over the limit, but not by a really huge amount, so you will not have a big problem getting it down. But it will be a problem. Don't eat so much meat per day - 3 to 4 ounces is all that a person needs of meat - and don't eat the fatty kinds, go lean meat and go fish and chicken and turkey, no skin. Some lean cuts of beef, a little pork at times, that sort of thing. Eat more vegetables and fruit and yogurt and whole grain cereals. No junk foods. Limit fried foods, go baked and grilled. Look on the net about it. And foods really do have cholesterol info listed, they are required, so you have to look at the label better, you'll find it.

If you can't leave eating meat, try eating fat free meat like red meat or chicken without its skin. Do not eat pork meat and lamb meat, even without their fat, they are still the bigest source of cholesterol. The bigest source of cholesterol is fat and the fat is consetrated under animal skin. Other source of cholesterol is egg yolks and animal inner organs such as liver, lungs, etc but the egg whites are good protein source. So you can eat whole egg only two pieces a week. Secondly you migth need to choose oil free food which is boiled or barbecued without any oil or margarine or butter on it. And the third try not to eat fast foods, pizzas, junk food or some sort because they are also cholesterol rich. There are some food that migth help you to reduce cholesterol such as fishes, fruit, beans and vegetables. Excercising three times a week migth reduce your cholesterol too. You migth want to try them.

You do know that if you use protection there's a very slim change the girl will get pregnant, right? If you're not ready to have sex that's one thing, and that's a completely respectable decision, but you can be ready to have sex before you're ready to be a dad. You're not a loser and if you've had girlfriends in the past there's no reason you won't have others in the future, but don't turn down sex just because you don't want kids yet.

Eating right is very simple. Lots of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Limit sugar, fat, and large portions. You can buy a book or just look online for the amount of cholseterol contained in foods. Don't eat fast food EVER because it is all terrible for you. It is hard to change your eating habits, but once you do you will feel much better.

I would first start by decreasing the amount of times you eat out!

Then I would go visit a dietition or nutrionist to learn about food and food labels in general since you said you don't understand them. They'll be able to help you understand what is better or healthier to eat. Your diet WILL need to be changed in order to keep healthy. They can also help you set-up menus and help you. They'll be able to give you more healthy alternatives to help boost your health and eventually lower your cholesterol.

The Internet is a great source of information. Your problem is part your diet, part life style but also your parents gave you a present = genetics play a big part!!!!

There are drugs... that can help!!!!

Your doctor did not do his job!!!! You need to find another. Ask around, make a couple of calls to other docs in your area, find a doctor willing to help and interested in your health.

You need a new doc!!!!!
