Take the #4 or #5 (Express) train to Bowling Green station, and you will end up at Battery Park, where you can purchase boat ticket to Statue of Liberty, if you want to do more than look at it from Manhattan. (Her crown is closed though. Many restrictions in place after 9/11.) http://www.mta.nyc.ny.us/nyct/subway/
The #1 train subway station at South Ferry is CLOSED for renovations!

Then from Battery Park, you can walk north about 6-7 blocks to Wall Street. If you don't feel like it, hop on the grey-colored van "Connections" which is FREE and runs along Water Street. Catch it in front of One New York Plaza (at the regular #15 MTA bus stop). Drivers are very nice. See link for map and picture of the bus. http://www.nycvisit.com/content/index.cfm?pagePkey=1081

Then you can catch the northbound "R" train on Rector Street which is a couple of blocks west on Wall Street. (Trinity Church will be in sight. Many colonial forefathers are buried in the yard.) Take subway to 34th Street-Herald Square Station. Look up and walk towards the building.

It's gonna be a HOT, HUMID day...travel with water, sunscreen, cap. Subways can be very hot if the airconditioning is not working. Have FUN in my hometown.

The last answer provided -- the 4/5 to Bowling Green -- is the one you want. However, if you're on the Westside you can take the 1 Train to South Ferry subway stop. Same distance to the boats that take you to Lady Liberty. If you take the 1 train to South Ferry, however, just be sure you're in the first 5 cars of the train.

Wall Street is walking distance from Bowling Green and the South Ferry stop -- no need for a subway.

At every subway station, there are subway maps. Or, you could always ask the MTA employees who are also at the subway stations and they can give you detailed directions.
