I think the leading candidates for greatest middleweight champion of all time is pretty obvious. The number one guy in this weight class ever is, without question, Sugar Ray Robinson. At number two I think it would be a pretty safe to say that "Marvelous" Marvin Hagler has that place locked down. From there, I would have to say that Carlos Monzon is a good number three. I'll probably have to put Bernard Hopkins at number four and for number five, I think it could be a free for all with Nino Benvenuti, Emile Griffith, and Harry Greb. Tony Zale and Rocky Graziano are in the mix too, but honorable mention in my eyes.

Before setting out to evaluate the top five non-heavyweight fighters over the last 25 years, I contacted eleven well-known and respected boxing writers. I asked them who they thought were the top five fighters over the last 25 years, excluding heavyweights. I also told them to use whatever criteria they wanted in ranking the fighters who should be among the top five. My only stipulation was that Evander Holyfield could not be included because he fought as a heavyweight an overwhelming majority of his career. I also let them know that Michael Spinks and Roy Jones were eligible because they will be remembered as light heavyweights. Sugar Ray Leonard was the only fighter that was on every ones top five. Below is the breakdown.

Sugar Ray Leonard - 11
Marvin Hagler - 9
Roy Jones - 8
Roberto Duran - 5
Julio Cesar Chavez - 5
Pernell Whitaker - 5
Thomas Hearns - 4
Michael Spinks - 2
Ricardo Lopez - 1
Alexis Arguello - 1
Mark Johnson - 1
Mike McCallum - 1
Oscar De La Hoya - 1
James Toney - 1

old girl cheated she looked some stuff up probably because she dont know. but you have to have the sugar rays i would not include duran he was at his best at the smaller weights than middleweight same for arguello aron pryor, and a whole lot of others now even though hearns hit hard as you know what but that chin had more glass than a china cabinet. now carmen bassilio took it to sugar ray robinson so he got on the list i only saw the champion lose the belt on a split descision and jermaine taylor is not making the list at least until he beat somebody up so to finish off the list the two champs who lost on a split decsision hopkins and hagler so we have Ray Robinson, Ray Leonard, Carmen Bassilio, Bernard Hopkins, and Marvin Hagler not in that order they should fight it out in a tournament and give B-Hop the first round bye because he didnt lose for ten years and he is older not older than everybody on the list but the boy is fine wine he got better with time

1. Marvin Hagler
2. Sugar Ray Robinson
3. Sugar Ray Leonard
4. Bernard Hopkins
5. Thomas Hearns

Theres a few more that would be close as well Oscar De La Hoya, Roberto Duran, Carlos Monzon. De la hoya and Duran were both definately better at different weights so didnt get in, and Monzon would be my number 6.
