Depends where you live! You get used to your local tap water, and when you travel and try it elsewhere, it always tastes different and not as good. Some area have "soft" water, others"hard" water, and they taste very different, although both are fine for you.
But in terms of quality and purity, in the US it depends how much your local government spends on cleaning the tap water. Some areas dont consider its too important, which I think is a weird idea.

I don't know about recent days, but a U.S.survey was conducted several years ago and N.Y.C. tapwater was found to be the tastiest and was said to even beat out some major bottled water companies. Go figure!?
