Attach the leash to his collar and let him drag it around the house under your supervision. When he gets used to it, pick up the end and YOU follow Him around. Let him walk you! Then, when he is doing well, have a few tiny little yummy treats and coax him to follow you around, giving him a treat every so often to encourage him. Make it fun and he will soon be walking like a champ! :)

I would encourage a puppy training class (or series of classes). I had to do this with my first Cavalier (I have two); and while he was not necessarily a star pupil, he watched the other dogs in the class and soon caught on to the program.

I've always said about this breed, they may not always do the right thing, but they have a strong desire to do the right thing (e.g., please their owner). Once he sees other dogs responding to the leash, I think most of the problem will be solved. Then, it's just practice and training.

Today, mine heels without a leash because he just got so used to how to walk with me. I'm sure that will happen for you, too.

KimbeeJ said it best, but I would like to add that you need to be patient with your dog and he will get it. I have an 11 week old puppy and when I brought him home at 8 weeks, I took him outside on a leash and started walking and he layed down and there was not getting him up. I just had to carry him in. We worked alot just walking up and down the driveway giving him treats along the way, trying to make being on the leash a good thing.

kimbeej took my answer so i was going to say she is correct this is how i trained mine i actually did it outside to all my dogs when they were puppy's and it worked so i guise i see i am not the only one some time you may need a little longer leash if doing it outside but letting them feel in control of the leash at first and then slowly holding it but not tight just enough so they don't think your holding them back then as they get use to you holding the leash you should be fine.

Good luck and keep loving your pet.

Have some favorite snacks and reward the pup when he walks with the leash well. Also, leave the leash on in the house while watching him so he gets use to the feel of the leash.
