You have to learn to sleep in the daytime.
When my husband worked 3'rd, I blacked out the windows with black material, then covered that with thermal curtains.
He learned to sleep like a baby !
That makes it much easier to learn to stay up all night.
( getting a goods days rest )

I don't do that now but I did work a swing shift. We would work 7am-3pm for 7 days be off 2 days then work 11pm-7am for 7 days and be off for 3 days and then 3pm-11pm for 7 days and be off for 2 days. Now for your question on working the midnight shift, we called it the graveyard shift. I would go to sleep around 5pm and get up at 9pm, go to work and stay busy and also if it got really bad where I was fighting my sleep, I took No-Dose, it will keep you awake and you are fine, it is not a drug either. Then when I got off at 7am I would go home and go to bed and sleep til when ever and then start all over again. I did this for 5 years. I quit working all together this last March.

I work midnights, in fact I am at work as we speak. At home my bedroom window is covered with very dark and heavy fabric so my room is darker than the darkest night. When I get home in the morning, I spend time with my daughter, and then at about 3 or 4 I take her to my mom's house, have dinner at my mom's, go to the gym for about an hour and then go home and get some sleep. I sleep until about 10:30 and then get up and take a shower to be at work by midnight. I eat dinner at work usually around three in the morning, so that I have more engery to keep me awake until 8 am when my replacement comes in. I work in a crisis center, as the only midnight staff manager. I also step outside often for a smoke and lots of water/soda to keep me awake.

I work midnights in fact Im at work now too, I drink energy drinks, try to get at least 6 hours of sleep before I hv to report for my shift, Im on here answering questions, playing games, I read, make jewerly, I guess a lotr depends on what kind of job it is....mine is pretty slow paced so I can do a variety of things fortuantly. The shift for sure takes some gettin gused to but once youve managed to be able to sleep during the day you should be alright! GOOD LUCK!!
