hi i'm in the navy and i'm an avionics technician. we only leave for 6 months, sometimes on a boat sometimes on land, however you can get stationed overseas for 2years, but that is all... never back to back... however the coastguard...i am unsure about, i do know for a fact that there are bases you can be stationed on. i know the training is in newark newjersey. i had a friend who is in the coastguard i saw him well maybe 6months out of the year. you have to understand that being in the military you are not always guaranteed to see your family, and sometimes you get lucky sometimes you don't.... i would recommend going to military.com to explore some of your answers....also go to http://www.uscg.mil/USCG.shtm its the official coast guard website...
and as far as college goes...i am not sure i didn't see anything... if you have any navy questions feel free to contact me

It purely depends. The Coast Guard is under the Navy during wartime. In the Vietnam War, Coast Guards were called to patrol in the waters of Vietnam and Cambodia. Yes, you can attend college just like other service branches. There is active and reservist units. And yes they do have bases but very minor and share with Navy.

I have complete respect for all the branches. Everyone does there part to fight terrorism, protect the USA and the World. When you make a choice about a branch make sure you investigate all your options, Like the Navy everybody thinks we are just about going to sea, which is not the case. We cover everything from the Land, Sea, Air, Cant forget the Special Forces as well. Have to Talk to a recruiter from each branch to see what they are all about. But I myself Prefers going out to sea, Just because that's how I'm traveling around the world, going to places that I've never been before or never thought I've ever will go to, Its pretty exciting. Especially bragging to your parents or calling them when you are in Italy, Australia, Spain or anywhere in the world, Its pretty cool then of course you have to get them some souvenirs.

Chances are good that you will be stationed stateside in the USCG, as opposed to the USN. Don't forget that the CG is involved in every war and has bases throughout the USA, including Alaska, Hawaii, Guam, Puerto Rico, US Possessions and territories,(in other words--worldwide).
If you have an avaition rating, you will likely serve at a large airbase stateside. Get a seagoing rating, and enjoy the adventure, mate.

the Coast Guard does deploy, for times similar to that of the Navy's..six months or so. and yes, when I say deploy, I mean the Gulf. 2 CG personnel were killed when their craft was struck by a suicide boater a couple of years ago.
EVEY BRANCH deploys. If family is that important to you that you cannot bear to be away for a few months, then the military is not for you.
