When you take your dog to obedience school; your dog is not the only student. You should be learning the lessons.

It is not a bad thing that your dog only knows how to sit. You just havn't put the time into training him yet and now you want to. The first link is all you need to clicker train, a positive style of training that I use and love. The second link is all you need to learn to train using corrections. A negative style of training that I don't think works as well. They are both excellent sites. What you decide to use really depends on your personality and patience.

I don't know about your local library, but mine has about 4 shelves with books on training your dog. Go to the library, look at all the books, flip through them and find the 2 or 3 that you think would work best for your dog, get them out, read them, then proceed to train.
I like the Power of Positive Dog Training by Pat Miller. Got it out of the library. Read it. Three weeks later, my dog knows sit, down, touch, kisses, and is crate-trained and loose-leash walks (most of the time).

If you are serious about training the puppy yourself. Get lots of treats. Work on one thing at a time. You have to be repetitious all the time. Once he/she seems to be picking up on that command move on to working on something else. Remember to always give a treat after she does well. Praise her all the time, tell her what a good girl/boy she is and use a very excited voice. they love that. Use only one word commands, sit, stay. No, bad... examples of one word commands. dogs do not understand complete sentences. They focus on one word.
I hope this helps.. Good Luck.

Your dog will only be as good as the time you put into him. They're like children. They all learn at a different rate. But if you stay on them and work with them EVERYDAY you'll find it does'nt take long.
Go buy yourself some training manuals, enroll him in a training class and be prepared to take him and stay with him or go to the library.
If you're not prepared to put some effort into his training then all I can tell you is that there are no stupid dogs only stupid owners.

Yes I do...take a treat in your fist and hold it so the dog can smell it, move your arm in a circle getting the dog to follow your hand while saying "spin" (find out which direction he is most comfortable turning towards as they favor right or left turns) repeat repeat repeat, each time raising your hand higher up and moving it in smaller circles while saying spin every time and if he completes the spin make sure to give him the treat instantly and lots of praise and patting. Eventually only using your hand to make a small circular gesture in the air, by the end he will know how to do the trick with just the gesture or just the verbal command. Now to teach him down...hold a treat in your fist and let him smell it then move your hand dowm between his front legs forcing him to lay down while saying "down" when he is laying on the ground give him the treat and lots of praise. repeat repeat. Teaching him to rollover make sure you are outside on the grass give him the "down" command and then while saying rollover move your hand with the treat inside around behind his head and down to the side and he should lay on his side and give him a little help by pushing his legs over so he rolls over and them give him the treat and lots of praise. If your dog likes to jump naturally set up a bar between 2 lawn chairs and while holding a treat in one hand and holding his collar with the other, put the hand with the treat in it on the other side of the jump and put some gentle pressure on his collar towards the jump saying "jump" he should automatically jump over the obstacle then reward him and repeat until you dont need to encourage him by holding his collar.
There is many more but too hard to explain I suggest ordering this book from the website I have it and it gives you some good tips and advice and some other unique tricks for dogs. www.themuttlovecompany.com I think it costs about 10 dollars canadian. Good luck!!

Well I have alot of books on dog trainig, so just figure out what tricks you want to teach your dog, and find something to motivate it. This could be a toy or treats. for my 2 year old mutt, she will learn very quikly with treats. And praise them every time they get something right, or at least try to. show them you are happy and that is what they should do. Most dogs love to hear praise, and also to please. good luck with your dog
