When I first started flying (over 600,000 miles ago), I didn't fly much and 5 hour flights felt like forever. After a few trips to Europe and Asia, time seemed to pass a lot faster.

The trick is to completely take your mind off of flying. If you just read the in-flight magazine and shopping catalogs, you can usually kill a good 30-60 minutes before they serve drinks, meanls, or start the movie.

A good movie will burn 90 minutes or so. So now you've burned about 2-3 hours of your flight. If you bring along a good book, that will keep you mind focused and you can usually burn the last 90 minutes of so before you see the islands and they start the landing cycle.

Don't listen to music, it doesn't really take your mind off anything. If the person sitting next to you is interesting, start a conversation. Take a few minutes to walk around the cabin (you need to do this anyway for health reasons).

Hope that helps.

How about looking forward to Hawaii??????
Look at Hawaii travel books and magazines. They will build up your excitement....after all, when that plane comes down, you'll be THERE!!! My favorite place in the whole world.
I also listen to the airplane's XM or whatever they have. Love XM...so many choices.
Too bad you can't be online during your flight because of interference.
Most people on that plane will love to talk and give advice about what to do. As always, be careful about what you decide to believe and who you would give information to.
Deprive yourself of sleep before the flight and you will be glad to get an hour or more's nap.

Watch the trains!!
Read a book. You remember what those look like, right?
Ask the flight attendant where you can exchange your currency for Hawaiian money.
Bring your laptop and do Yahoo! Answers!
Use the skyphone and say"you'll never guess where I'm calling from!"

Seriously, I have trouble understanding that you can't occupy 5 hours somehow.
Take a nap.
Get drunk.
Join the MileHigh Club. Even if you do it by yourself.
Bring some stuff from work with you. Maybe the boss will pay you for the time?

read a book.
i just went there last wk
and i'm from nyc so it was a 11 hr ride not including the 3 hr break in san francisco waiting for transfer
i read " the curious incident of the dog in the night-time"
it's a cute interesting book that's different from ur everyday best seller. check it out
or try the devil wears prada..it's not ur average gossip-girl-turned-chick-flick-movie book.

depends on the plane you ride, but some have tvs...so u can read for a while, and then switch to listening to music, or watching tv. movies cost 5 bucks...so don't waste ur money there...have fun!

Honey, flying is no big deal, believe me!

I was terrified the first time I had to do it! But, once I'd done it, it seemed about as dangerous as riding in a car or a bus! In fact there are mosre chances of accidents on the land than in the air! Just think about it, you hear about road accidents everyd day, but how many air accidents do you hear about?

Just take a good video game with you, if you don't like watching on board movies, and play it. Trust me, time will, literally, fly!

my husband and i went to hawaii for our honey moon two years ago and we have a 12 hour flight. so a five hour flight is nothing. buy some magazines or puzzle books to look at while in the air. flying is really not that bad. i wish we only had a five hour flight. we are going again this october. look forward to your destination. don't worry about the flight. relax and have fun. you are going to love hawaii.

Five hours isn't really much of a trip, especially as you'll have two movies to watch and a meal to eat. But if you want to zonk out, ask your doctor to prescribe a sleeping pill and that will get you through the flight.
