Um, er... Mom? It's just a phase. Listen to her when she talks. It won't be long until you're wishing for these days again. The teen years are coming. You'll be begging her to talk to you then. So, don't discourage this phase she is going through. It won't last long.

Maybe that is just her personality, so why stop her??? Why not give her an outlet or a venue to talk as much as she pleases? Perhaps enroll her in a junior debate club, or take her to visit senior citizens at a home for the elderly. They love to have someone to talk to. Just don't try change her if that is just a part of her personality. :-)

I am having the same preoblem with my almost 5 year old son. You cannot get a word in for him like if i am trying to talk to someone or even a stranger in a doctor's office he is telling all his stories of playing and all of that. I love him to death but my god sometimes you just want them to hush. I have tried and tried to get him to be quiet at times and he can't go past 30 seconds to be quiet.
I don't what anyone could do to just get them to be quiet for a bit. If you find out please post cause i am going insane too.

My son is almost 5 and tends to talk a lot too. I ask him to stop or say shh and he just keeps going. Sometimes they really want to just get something out so I let him but if I am trying to do something or just don't want to hear noise it gets to the point I have to scream SHUT UP!
Your's is a bit older so if you are busy or want quiet first ask her if it's important, let her finish if it is and then if she keeps going and going just tell her that she needs to stop and that it's really rude if she won't. She might need to be punished if she really won't listen to you but try giving her something to do like a bead kit to make bracelets and jewelry, those things take forever ;)

Very normal for that age. My sister is 11 and she does the same thing!! She'll grow out of it. Until then, just keep asking nicely for her to stop! Good luck for you and the jabberjaws, I know how you feel!

For some reason they seem to do this. What you could try is to say....OK I can listen to you for 5 more minutes but then I have to go and do ________? Never say you're too busy because as she gets older you're going to want her to talk. After listening to her for awhile you should remind her that you're reading or watching TV or doing the laundry. This also teaches her self-control.

My daughter had that same problem, since she started talking! She was actually diagnosed ADD and is on meds, but still the talking persists, just not as much. Some people are just talkers.
