Don't give your life history! Here's how I break mine down
Objective
Skills and Related Experience (if a skill isn't related to the job I'm applying for I don't list it)
Work History - I only include employers I have been with over a year and only go back five years. (If they want more they can ask at the interview)
Education - College degree earned, school attended and year graduated.

If you have any training in that field of work you'd want to be sure to include that. All you want to do is give the employer enough about you to get them interested enough so they'll call you in for an interview.
On your cover letter, which is also not that difficult you should say something nice about their company, why you think you'd be a good employee for them and at the end say something like "I would welcome the chance to discuss my skills and experiences with you further".

The resume shouldn't be more than one page and the cover letter should not repeat whats on your resume, it should say something about you that isn't on the resume itself.

You'll include all the credentials you have earned, of course, but try to find something that sets you apart. List volunteer community service -- if you coached a kid's team, or organized a fun run, or worked with a wheelchair basketball group -- these are the sorts of things that make a difference on resumes.
Good luck!
