Check out Nada.com they have a classic car section that will give you the book value of the car. It won't be 100% correct, but it'll give you a fairly good idea. If you looking to sale it may want to check out http://forums.vwvortex.com/ it's the big site for water-cooled vw's since things are collector items, may be a good place to sale it.

To uthockey32: Just becuase you don't want/like the car doesn't mean there's no demand for the car. Honestly if the car so unwanted, unliked why would VW bring back the name this year?

Though they have a small following, the '78's aren't the best Rabbits. Operating OK, but not looking too pretty I'd say about $500 for a gas engine. They can go for more depending on condition and your local market. VW's are more and less popular in different parts of the country. A diesel can easily bring about twice that and more even though, again, a 78 isn't one of the better ones. It's possible as part of the "rebuild" the stock 1.5 diesel was swapped for the later 1.6 engine. This is a quite popular swap and would also increase the value.

I paid 300$ for my 81 rabbit... had to get new tires, brakes, etc. but it came with like 100$ speakers that still work great. it also depends on if it is a diesel or a gaser

78? I don't think you could get more than $3000. Try looking for something similar on craigslist or ebay and see what other people are asking/getting for a similar vehicle.

$1,000. Just not a car anyone really wants. And demand is what makes a car worth more.
