I'm removing an impacted wisdom tooth soon and i was asked if i want to have a partial sedative to make me drowsy or just local anaesthesia. I can't decide which would be necessary whether i should pay extra for a sedative? ..i removed 2 previously on LA

Ask the oral surgeon how difficult is the impaction? Also, know your attitude. Are you worried or jumpy in the dental chair? IV sedation will help. Uncomplicated impactions can be done under local. IV only relaxes you. You will still get local only you won't know it. I am a dentist.

Is the tooth still completely under the gum tissue? Impacted in bone? If so I would probably go for the sedative, because I wouldn't want to see or hear what was going to go on to get it out. If it is impacted in the bone then there will be more going on than just pulling it out, as I figure was the case with the other 2 you had taken out.
But if the other two were slightly impacted also and you were fine, then you would probably be OK. I have known people to do it both ways, but I guess I wouldn't want to deal with it!
I had all four impacted and there was never a question of not being sedated! Thankfully!
Good Luck! and dont forget to take the pain medication as soon as you can afterwards!

If the tooth is impacted, I would recommend you be put to sleep. Both of my bottom wisdom teeth were impacted and the pain I felt when I woke up was bad. I could not imagine being awake or having a local to get me through that!!!

All four of my wisdom teeth were impacted and I was going to try a local anesthesia and that didnt work, I had to get my oral surgeon to stop and sedate me. I would definantly recommend the Sedative. Best of Luck!

Assuming that the wisdom tooth is NOT impacted:

how do you react to pain, to icky sounds? were you bothered by the other surgery?

i would go for the partial sedative, but that is just me.

I had all of my teeth pulled at one time with a local anesthetic in about an hour, at only 22, boy did they want to stay but i honestly only felt a little pulling at the time. ANd it did not hurt bad while i was healing either.
