take any issue - and show me bible verses against it
and I will show you other verses for it--------------
So really what good is it? Other than some entertaining little stories???
Don't get me wrong, those little stories have helped me greatly in my life, but nothing i have read in it makes me believe it is the ultimate authority of what is right and wrong, or the words from the creator of all things - the Star Wars movies and other sources have helped me out just as much --

If you believe in following the Bible - how is it possible??

You are implying there are contradictions; but there are none.

Can the Bible be followed? No. and I think that's the point.

The Old Testament (specifically the pentatuch section) sets up the terms of what Christians call the "Old Convenant". Basically this sets up a bunch of rules about how we do everything ("the Law"), and then sets up a system for covering out butts when we find we haven't kept the law perfectly (this usually involves burning a dead animal of some sort).

In the Old Covenant, the Law is there to emphasize that noone can live up to the law -- IE, God has a standard and we can't live up to it. The sacrafices are there to remind everybody that it's God's grace that keeps us covered.

Then, in the New Testament, Christ came and fufilled the Law. Christ, being perfect, was the final sacrafice needed, and we can be saved though that sacrafice now. Part of the significance of this is that we see that its more about attitude than actions.

This is a gross oversimplification here, but basically "Following the Bible" (in the sense of "following the Law") is impossible, and that's the point -- that God's standards are WAY higher than what we can ever live up to.

"Following the Bible" in the sense that we follow the teachings in the Bible as we interpret them is very possible, but I don't think this is what you meant. This is more about an overall attitude than specific slip-ups we might have.

I am still wondering about things (advances in the world) that are not listed in the Bible. I would have thought Space Exploration, Electricity, Auto Mobiles, Cures for diseases, etc, etc. things of that nature would be addressed if the all knowing had input in the writing of the Bible.
I mean the 10 commandments are fairly redundant, Do unto others is really all you need, the other 9 say the same thing just in a different way.
So, why do no advancements get mentioned in the Bible?

Nowhere does the bible contradict the 10 commandments so I'm affraid you got it wrong.

There are of course bits in the Bible where man supposedly hears God's voice telling him to take an extra wife or two and massacre those people on that really fertile land. These days the "faithful" fly planes in to the sides of buildings. It's just that people will always be morons.

Follow the 10 commandments, even if you're an atheist. You just don't worship any other God. The other commandments are just to do with sensible living.

When you compare verse to verse, of course it can seem like a contradiction.

But when read with the entire thought or story being told, you will not find a contradiction.

If you have a seemingly contradiction, let me know the two, and I will try to give you the biblical explanation. I am by no means a total bible scholor, and still have many things that I do not understand, but verse to verse, I believe that with God guiding my fingers, I can give an explanation.

The wisdom and beauty of the Bible message have been acclaimed by thinking men from all nations and from all walks of life. The famous scientist and discoverer of the law of gravity, Sir Isaac Newton, said: “No sciences are better attested to than the Bible.” Patrick Henry, the American revolutionary leader famous for the words “Give me liberty, or give me death,” also declared: “The Bible is worth all other books which have ever been printed.” Even the great Hindu sage Mahatma Gandhi once told the British viceroy of India: “When your country and mine shall get together on the teachings laid down by Christ in this Sermon of the Mount, we shall have solved the problems, not only of our countries but those of the whole world.” Gandhi was speaking of Matthew, chapters 5 to 7, in the Bible.

The Bible provides the mind with food necessary for mental balance. When men turn away from the one true source of wisdom and guidance, then only chaos can be expected, as has happened; just take a look at the world around us.

Relying solely on the wisdom of men, however intelligent, cannot be sufficient for man to govern his affairs successfully. Man is not the Creator; he is the one created. How can the one created know better than the One creating? But instead of relying on God’s thinking, the worldly-wise have substituted their own thinking. As a result man’s mentality and order of things break down. It is like trying to run a high-powered automobile by putting rubbish instead of high-performance gasoline in the fuel tank! Or like a person eating dirt and garbage as a steady diet instead of proper food. His body mechanism will soon break down. So, too, with the mind. The only way it will operate as it should is if it gets the proper fuel that comes from God and is revealed through his Word, the Bible.

Man is but a babe in God’s sight. His foolishness in human affairs proves he is no more able to control his destiny than a newborn babe. A person would not think seriously of allowing his baby’s scribbling on a piece of paper to be used as a guide for a long, hazardous journey. Relying solely on man’s mentality, to the exclusion of God’s Word, is the same. Man is a babe in a demon-controlled world. He is up against spirit forces far beyond his power to control. So, he needs the wisdom and direction that come from above.—Eph. 6:10-18.

“There exists a way that is upright before a man, but the ways of death are the end of it afterward.” Prov. 14:12

I haven't had any great difficulty in reconciling different parts of the Bible if one pays attention to the historical & literary contexts.

Is any particular issue giving you a problem? Ask a question! Or better yet, try getting a copy of "Eerdman's Handbook to the Bible" (which explains the cultural & historical context book by book).

There are many other written examples of love outside of the Bible. I look at the Bible as the foundation of truth. But, the message is taught in other ways such as movies, etc. Love God and one another......that's the message of the Bible. It's pretty simple, but people have misinterpreted, added their own opinions, and abused the original message. Good luck!

The problem with learning good and evil from Star Wars is that evil doesn't have an obvious face. You need to judge well and live a righteous life and a good life or it is easy to lose your way.

Following the ten commandments lead to the life called spiritual.
