Just thought I'd put a question mark on the end of that famous line. Personally I think religion was something created by humanity at a time when humans didn't have the means to figure out why the world worked as it did (science, technology etc). I also think that people stick to religion as a means of feeling safe; they delude themselves into believing an illusion—an illusion that there is order in the universe, and that salvation is possible. The number of atheists in the world is growing...maybe one day religion will be looked upon as a barbaric, primitive custom as humanity grows more advanced.

I'm so glad that science and technology has solved all of life's mysteries! Why didn't someone tell me!! Call religion an opiate, a fool's wish, a dying man's last hope. Why do you care? I never seem to understand why people like you give a crap about what those who believe in God do or think. Your intellectual superiority should keep you from even wasting a moment's breath on it. For those who do believe...let them have their faith, their belief, there hope. Aren't they all too stupid for you to waste your breath on?

That is a pretty funny question. I am a Christian and very proud of it. Just remember a couple of things: 1 - It takes more faith to NOT believe in God than it does TO believe in God; 2 – There are NO atheist on their death-bed. I see your question for what it is and realize that you are only trying to get some people “fired up.” I’m sure the barrage of responses will fly now. Have fun!

My thoughts exactly. Yet it seems now after all these centuries, the feeling of safety has been replaced by wishing for the end. Why you may ask? It's because the fearlessness was like a child whistling in the dark and now the child is starting to see monsters. Monsters that the religions created themselves, and they are everywhere. Devils, Satan, and eternal fires of hell darken their doorsteps and they just wish it would all end.

I concur.

Very interesting thoughts. I have always wondered if Christianity and other modern-day religions will one day (maybe hundreds or even thousands of years from now) go extinct. People used to believe in Zeus and Hera and Apollo, etc. Now they are just bedtime stories.

Religion is like a drug, and it's used to treat the fear of ignorance. The trouble is, it doesn't cure the ignorance, it only compounds it.

Think on this: What do you do with your child if he is afraid of spiders? Do you take him to a doctor and dope him up on pills for the rest of his life? Or do you educated him about spiders, try to remove the ignorance and fear by giving the child knowledge?

One can choose to dope up a child and make ignorance with religion, or choose to teach the child the reality of the universe through education.

I think it takes more courage to believe in what we don't completely understand, and more courage to have faith than to not. Science answers some questions, but not all.
