It's often very easy to spot one abroad. And I don't mean the fat middle aged ones ignoring signs prohibiting flash photography, I mean young people as well.

Don't get me wrong, I have American friends, but many of them are also quite loud, and cringe when they see other Americans on holidays

rockEsquirrel - yep. Most other countries will tell you the same if honest

Panacea - yes, but with the exception of the Japanese who can't help standing out because they so often travel in such huge numbers, other groups don't stand out in the way Americans do

As for the twit talking about the world war, do you think joining in- to you think America could actually have stayed out with it's own massive population from those countries.

Robert D you fool, I'm talking about Americans abroad, LOUD - why?

bonbon, Emma, yes thanks for that. I guess it is a lot of the wankers. I have a few American friends appalled at this attitude and who respect wherever they find themselves to be.
I've been moving around for the last ten years mostly around Europe.

The level of whinging about services is truly amazing among American tourists. Never satisfactory, always " well in the States..., bla bla bla"... "AND THAT MAAAAN IN THE HOTELL WAS SOO RUUDDDE!" I've heard variations on this theme bawled between Americans abroad so often- things aren't the same as at home- deal with it, adapt, fit in, when in rome... the rest of the street don't need to know!

Ya'll were kind of fond of us in 1941 when we went on over and saved you from being wiped off the face of the earth, weren't ya?

Our planes and guns weren't too loud for your grandparents, sonny.

We'll try to keep it down next time you need to be bailed out.

I would say we are loud because that is just a part of our culture. Many Americans are not afraid to speak their minds, and to do it in the most overt way possible. Like it or not, let's face it, that's what makes Americans Americans! Come on, New York City would not be the same town if everyone was meek, mild, quiet and polite! :-)
In terms of the "whining" that is done by Americans abroad (i.e. "things aren't like this at home, etc..) I don't think that many people from other countries realize that many Americans are not exposed to any cultural diversity whether it be with another country's language, customs, cuisines, etc.. Because our country is so large, and not really closely connected (expcept for Mexico and Canada of course, and many here cannot even afford to travel to those countries) to other countries, we don't have the opportunity to really travel extensively to see those other cultures. I would think this is much easier to do in Europe, but maybe not!
Some people also have a very narrow-minded view that our country is the best and everyone should be like us. However, if someone believes this, am not sure why they would be compelled to travel outside the US.
Bottom line, we are all different and that's what makes the world an interesting and fun place, don't you think?? Not to mention, I am sure that many of the countries that Americans visit every year are willing to put up with us for the influx of American dollars they recieve from tourism.

I'm an American who has done a bit of traveling, and I do have to say that many are loud and disrespectful. I even told off one who bought an gyro in Greece and stood there complaining because it wasn't like the ones she got at home. I turned around and told her that these were the real thing and that she needed to apologize to the people working there. (I got great service after that) :) I've heard people complain because they were shopping and the workers didn't speak English. Well, we were the travelers, the guests in their country, we weren't at home. I would always at least try to master a few phrases, please and thank you, at least. I've always enjoyed my travels, and loved the new experiences and meeting new people. If people want it to be just like at home, then they should just travel in the US. My opinion, of course.

Americana's talk loud because it's the culture. Since we're a melting pot of every race, creed, and nation ... well, we've learned that the loudest one dominates. The Irish dominated over the English 'cas they were loud. The German's over the Irish because they were louder. Now, the Mexicans are loud too ... see they too are adapting to learn that the loudest one dominates ...

Untill America stops taking in different cultures, this will perpetuate until our culture just sits and screams. Since accepting other cultures ... well, we're just learning to take in other cultures.

For the same reasons you often see asians wandering around New York City all googly eyed and flashing cameras everywhere they go. They are excited to be someplace new. The manner of expression is different than the local custom so it stands out.

I have to agree with bonbon. I've only been to London twice, but both times I went with a college group. Our leader always tried to push his way into cues and such. The majority of us, on the trip, just waited our turn.

because the decent ones don't get to travel much -its too expensive for regular hard-working people-and there are lots of us you just don't see. The loud, obnoxious ones have the money and they are rude rude rude! i have to deal with people like that even at work everyday-how awful is that?

what country do you live in?

For the same reason the fricking French, Germans, Austrians, Japanese, Chinese, Koreans, British, etc. do when they come over to America.

Just excited to be somewhere other than America. Don't you get excited when you are on vacation? Why doesn't anyone from "abroad" tip when they're in the USA? That's a better question. ;)

I can't speak for other Americans, but it covers up the buzzing in my head.

-Seriously, I have no doubt that the offenders you noticed were Americans; but, I'll bet you didn't notice the Americans who were quiet and respectful.
