I just read a news article about buying breast milk online.
I find the idea repulsive!

What do you think?

I think that breast milk has been scientifically proven to contain over 100 nutrients and other health conscious things that formula is years from coming close to. Not to mention that breast milk boost the immune system, IQ, more easily digested, and the list goes on. There are plenty of women out there who desperately want to give their babies the best, but cannot nurse for many reasons. I commend the industry behind this because it allows all women the chance to give their children the best possible if they are unable to provide it themselves. Besides, what do you think people thought about egg donations and surrogate mothers at first? .....Modification......They screen the milk you twits. It's clean milk from healthy women!

Ok for everyone that thinks its gross the idea is primarily for premature infants whose stomachs cannot handle formula and the mother is not producing adequate supplies to feed her infant. When purchasing milk online from a milk bank or not you should simply get the statement from the mother that she has been certified safe to sell her milk. Its a series of testing done on her blood AND the milk to rule out things like STDs, Viruses and antibodies present in the mother's blood and things like alcohol, tobacco and other drugs in the milk. The mother must pay for this test it costs about $300 and once done must be retaken every 6 months. IF the mother has this certifications then the milk is safe and the best thing for an ill infant.

If a mom was, for example, on chemo, and her newborn allergic to all types of formula, I can certainly understand why she'd do it. And it might not be as uncommon as we'd imagine for a mom to be being treated for a cancer discovered during pregnancy.

However, there are milk banks all over the US, at least, and that milk is tested for things like drugs and viruses, so I wonder why it would be necessary to purchase it. Or how safe it would be. But NOT feeding a newborn would certainly be deadly.

As to selling it, I think it would be a great way for a new mom to make a little extra money. She'd be helping another person's infant, too. But all that pumping! What a pain.

Repulsive? Milk? Hmm, odd response to me, but I suppose some things that bother me wouldn't bother you.

Way back in the day there use to be women called wet nurses. They would feed other women's babies their milk if that mom couldn't produce enough milk to feed the baby themselves. If the company is reputable the milk is tested to make sure the donor doesn't have any sickness that can be passed to baby drinking the milk.Where I work some babies get donor milk and they do fine.

Hey, if it comes from a healthy woman(they do screen the milk), and there's plenty of it for especially a preemie, what's the big deal. I've always called it liquid gold for my babies.

Oh god, i really don't think that its a great idea, feeding your baby a stranger's milk? You don't even know what kind of bacteria or virus it might have, what if that person has some kind of disease? I wouldn't

I think that is gross too! Especially since when you buy things online, you can never really be guaranteed of what you are getting!
