Muscle Spasms (Charley Horses) are caused due to a lack of potassium in your system. I have found that the easiest way to add some potassium to your diet is by drinking orange juice. It doesn't matter what brand as long as its real orange juice (not sunny delight). You can also eat bananas for potassium, you just have to eat a lot! Some dried fruits are a good source of potassium as well. Just check on the label and if it's around 10% of the recommended daily allowance, it is a good source of potassium.

Your not getting charlie horses, your getting leg cramps from lactic acid build up. You need to drink ALOT of water after you exercise for several hours before bed. Never workout hard rite before bed, your body has no time to get rid of the lactic acid. I used to have my calves seize up in my sleep in high school. The problem was I was getting home from practice late, eating and going to bed without properly stretching and I wasn't drinking enough water.

Maybe, start stretching b4 and after
also, increase your potassium, bananas, yoohoo drinks
and calcium,

ref: Most muscle cramps are just a result of working your muscles hard. But occasionally, muscle cramps are caused by temporary imbalances of calcium, potassium, or magnesium. "Sports drinks" may help stave off this type of cramp. If you get cramps often, though, talk with your doctor to find out what else you can do to prevent them or to find out if you have something more serious

drink more water, eat a banana a day, and if the problem persists, you can take a legatrim at night. It is an over the counter med that helps with cramps

all the above answers are what I was gonna say to help prevent them. I just want to tell you what I do when I get those very painful cramps- stand up. You can't really feel them that way.

Take a bar of soap like Ivory or Dove and unwrap it and put it under your fitted sheet then go to bed. I know you think I am being a joker but it really works! What do you have to lose??
My friends abuela told me this old wives trick and it worked like a charm! :)

Make sure you stretch before and after.

Also, eat bananas (for the potassium). Or take a multi vitamin.

Calcium is for your bones. It won't help your cramps.
