A well known scam. The check is no good.
Scam: Sellers advertising on line have been defrauded by 'buyers' who pay with cashier checks made out for amounts in excess of the agreed-upon purchase price and ask the balances be sent to third parties.
Status: Real fraud which costs its victims hundreds to thousands of dollars.

That, my friend, may be a scam. . The cashiers check could be a fake. The person you will take the check to the bank and wait 10 days to make sure the check clears. In the meantime, do not give the person the car until the check clears. It sounds like a scam to me.

Seems shady to me too. If the cashiers check is from a foreign bank tell him to take a hike or come up with cash. remember that even a cashiers check can be counterfited and it sometimes takes a long time to clear. If you cash it and the bank says it is fine so you use the money you can be unpleasantly surpised a week later when you are told the check was not good.

The expression is..."Money Talks, Nobody Walks". So these people can eithor come up with CASH or WAITE until the check clears...unless you happen to be The Bank. Another thing: It may take the Registry a week or two to produce the Title with the new owners name on it, so what's the hurry? Let this party cash their own check, or raise price of the car to accomodate the aggrivation at hand. Meanwhile somebody else may come along and buy the car for the real price with real CASH.BobV.from MA

DON'T DO IT! I had someone email me the same thing about my car. It's a scam and when you cash the check and send him the balance he gets the cash and when the check bounces you have to pay back the bank.
A lot of times the people doing this claim to be from another country or have a poor grasp of the language and really bad grammar and spelling. Also the guy who emailed me signed a different name every time he emailed me and couldn't keep straight what kind of car I was selling - dead giveaways.

This is almost sure to be a scam. You deposit the check and send them the difference. Then you find out the check is a forgery, and you are out the cash and the car!!
Send the check back and require USPS money orders. They can be cashed at any post office, and when you get the cash, you can give them the car!!

I am serious, you may be outpricing it .Too high. If someone buys privately irrespective from which medium ( ebay etc) they would want a good deal, cutting out the middle man etc. Don't expect a show room price because that is after the dealer adds his overhead costs. Look at your price and bring it down at least 15%. Top dollar attitude does not work in private sales and especially for cars.
